Agilt inköp av IT: En kvalitativ studie inom offentlig sektor2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Traditionally, the public procurement process has originated in the waterfall project model, with distinct phases and gates. To gain more flexibility and efficiency, the IT industry have adapted agile project methods instead. A challenge that has arisen due to this change is that the traditional procurement process rarely is adapted to agile project methods. Furthermore, the public sector is a large buyer of IT, but a significant part of all public projects within IT are failing in terms of exceeded budget. One reason for this could be that the traditional procurement process has difficulties in meeting the conditions required for agile methods, since it prevents the efficiency and goal achievement of IT procurement.

In this study, the possibilities and challenges of an agile procurement process for IT was researched. The study also included how the procurement process could be structured and applied, with the aim to increase the efficiency, the customer value and the harmonization between procurement of IT and the implementation.

The research questions were answered by a qualitative study where primary data was collected through interviews. A total of 23 deep interviews were conducted with different participants in a procurement process such as purchasers, suppliers and clients. The largest amount of data was collected at Luleå kommun, but interviews were also conducted with external respondents with knowledge of agile methods in the public sector. The interviews were analyzed through a thematic analysis, which resulted in several opportunities and challenges concerning agile procurement, together with a framework for agile procurement of IT.

The study shows that there are both opportunities and challenges in an agile procurement process of IT. Public organizations that for example is permeated of the agile ground values, with motivated individuals with a likeness of change and trust towards the suppliers, have good opportunities to work with agile procurement. Challenges exists in an increased need of structure, a change in purchasing and contract procedures and the need of education and a culture shift.

In the study, a framework for agile procurement of IT in the public sector has been developed. The framework is based on the national procurement process in Sweden and the agile ground values. In each procurement process phase activities that characterize agile methods are presented. The activities include for example creating self-organizing teams, setting requirements based on impact goals, creating a model for shared risk and work with incentives for efficiency. The study contributes to new knowledge of how agile methods can be incorporated in the public procurement process. By using the agile framework public organization can increase the harmonization between the procurement process and the implementation of IT, with the aim to increase the customer value and efficiency.

Munksund 5: En rättsutredning gällande miljöbalkens efterbehandlingsansvar vid en miljöförorening2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Sustainability documents have become more common in recent years and now sustainability reports have become mandatory for organizations meeting certain criteria. The sustainability reports drawn up according to the statutory requirements also have a requirement to obtain an opinion, at a limited level, from an auditor. On sustainability accounting, which are voluntary, the organization can choose to hire an auditor for review at a reasonable level, which is more extensive. The purpose of this study is to investigate the process of reviews and whether it delivers quality from the auditor's perspective. In addition, to examine non-professional investors' assessment of the audit performed. This was done through six in-depth interviews with auditors and eight interviews with non-professional investors. Conclusions from the study show that the auditor through their role contributes to an increase in quality with the reasonable review, but there are shortcomings in quality at the limited review. The studies also found that non-professional investors were not affected by audited or unexamined sustainability documents at investment choices, but that they consider it important that sustainability documents are drawn up and reviewed.

Musikaliska kontraster genom förbud: Undersökning av min kompositionsmetod antikomposition2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Knowledge is today considered the most important factor to create competitive organizations and the transfer of knowledge is therefore of great importance. More companies are discovering the advantages with the agile way of work to improve effectiveness. One of the leading agile methods is scrum, when a team consisting of individuals with diverse competences work closely together to deliver a product. Knowledge transfer is essential for agile teams using scrum since the method is dependent on good communication and that the team has the knowledge to succeed. This study is meant to describe and explain 1) how an agile way of work is affecting knowledge transfer within a scrum team 2) what factors are affecting the knowledge transfer within the team. To achieve this a multi case study, one extensive and three minors, were performed on knowledge intense businesses within information technology, business strategy and digitalization. Data gathering was made from semi structured interviews, observations and documents. The result shows that agile way of work is promoting knowledge transfer and that four main factors, level of distribution, knowledge promoting activities, spontaneous interaction and documentation have affected the transfer within the teams.

Open Handed Drumming: Att utveckla ambidexteritet på trumset2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Vägen till stilenligt spel: Att spela stilenligt på trummor2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Promoting sustainability by spreading the Integrated Profit and Loss (IP&L™) framework: A multiple case study approach in the forest- and water industry2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The integrated profit and loss (IP&L™) model is a model that provides a holistic performance evaluation of the organisation. The purpose of this study has been to explore how IP&L™ can be used in a wider setting and contribute towards more sustainable practices for an industry. The aim has therefore been to investigate advantages of having a widespread usage of the IP&L™ method, and to find out how the method can be spread to more companies. Based on this, the following three research questions was developed:

What are the advantages of IP&L™ within an industry?

What are the key factors in order to spread IP&L™ to other companies?

What are the prerequisites for collaboration around IP&L™?

The study has had a deductive and qualitative approach, investigating two different case companies. One company within the Australian water industry, and one within the Swedish forest industry. Data was collected through interviews with representatives from three different perspectives of working with IP&L™ within each company; the strategic perspective of sustainable development, the perspective of integrated reporting, and the market and customer perspective. It has been found that the main advantages of IP&L™ within an industry is that it develops consensus and new norms, enhances the external communication, and improves industry reputation. In order to spread IP&L™ to other companies, the study show that collaboration is an important factor, and to establish fruitful collaboration around IP&L™, it is important with leadership and dialogue.

This study contributes to theory by providing knowledge around the specific IP&L™ model. It further has a practical contribution in the sense that it provides deeper knowledge around the IP&L™ and its usefulness, and can serve as a foundation for organisations in further developing how they use IP&L™.

Den självständiga musikern: Om att bli sin egen lärare2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Social Network Sites and Tourism: A millennial perspective2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Social Network Sites have rapidly become intertwined with people’s core habits of daily life, and are often subliminal inputs during decision making processes when it comes to the area of Tourism. With this rapid shift in consumer opportunities, both in availability and exposure to information, people are faced with the challenge of accurately assessing current trends in order to best predict future outcomes for businesses and consumers alike. Although there is existing literature examining current tendencies for Social Network Sites and Tourism, the extrapolation of this data in a feasible way for the emerging Millennial generation is lacking. This is integral to forming a proper understanding of the future trends of global tourist communication as dictated by the usage of Social Network Sites.

Through the use of interview discussions centered on two focus groups of an all Millennial composition, the semi-structured interview approach was used. This to sought at a fundamental level to provide a better understanding of how Social Network Sites are used by tourists. Of particular focus within the research process was the specifics of tourist utilization of Social Network Sites. Further addressed, is the concept of the usage of electronic Word of Mouth and how this has allowed for a modification to the experience of tourism. The spoken word has been updated to an electronic Word of Mouth, and with it the Millennial generation has been raised into a world of information opportunity like none ever before. Understanding these trends allows for continued progression for both the consumer and business alike within the tourist business.

En Vinterresa: En resa genom instudering och interpretation i stycken ur Winterreise2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Fostering Network Effects: How to achieve user retention on multisided platforms2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of how multisided platforms (MSP) could retain different user groups on their platform. To fulfill the purpose, the following research questions (RQ) were derived: RQ 1: How could MSPs design their activities to retain users on the producer side(s)? and RQ 2: How could MSPs design their activities to retain users on the consumer side(s)?

Method – This study was conducted as an abductive single case study based on a multisided platform developed within the health sector. In addition, complimentary interviews were conducted to validate and expand the result from the case study. In total, 15 interviews were conducted and analyzed through thematic analysis.

Findings – The findings are presented in a framework showing what activities to conduct in certain stages of platform development and is divided between two distinct platform sides, producers and consumers. The different stages are relative to critical mass i.e. how many users the MSP has and shows which activities that is necessary in these stages.

Theoretical implication and Practical implication – The study suggests activities necessary for retaining users on MSPs seen to certain stages of development. Additional contributions are (1) in the beginning, MSPs should initially focus on the platform side who provides the most viable product, (2) mass in users is a prerequisite for finding the right matches, and (3) “super-platforms” with many value offerings will be key for retaining users and long-term success. The practical implications are (1) which activities that are necessary on a certain side of the MSP, (2) guiding managers with which activities that are suitable in a certain stage of platform development, and (3) provide managers with the ability to plan future activities.

Limitations and Future Research – This study is conducted in South-east Asia which implies that a similar study should be conducted in a western context. Furthermore, it is limited to a single-case study of an MSP, although there were exploratory and confirmative interviews with other companies. Future research should therefore include a multiple-case study to compare how different MSPs work with retention. Lastly, further studies into what critical mass is and how to estimate that, should be considered.

Key success factors for enabling autonomous Agile teams at the large-scale: A case study at Saab Aeronautics2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of this thesis is to continue the research on Agile teams in large projects and large organizations. Specifically, this thesis seeks to understand what key success factors there are for enabling autonomous Agile teams at large-scale and how they can be prioritized.

Method – This thesis is based on a case study at Saab AB, a large Swedish firm within the defense industry. In addition to the case study, interviews with representatives from three separate firms were conducted. The data consist of 13 interviewees with employees at Saab AB and three from the separate firms. A thematic analysis of the data was conducted following a six-step procedure.

Results – The results show eight themes with accumulated key success factors from extant literature and empirical findings from this study. The themes are Context, Agile Approach, Other, Dependencies, Planning & Goal Setting, Management Support, Team Stability and Culture, and they are prioritized in that order. Furthermore, a diagnostic questionnaire is established as a tool for managers and teams wanting to enable autonomous Agile teams at large-scale.

Theoretical Implications – This thesis contributes to current literature by combining theories of autonomous teams and Agile at large-scale, and by presenting key success factors for this combination to work. It also adds to lacking theory of autonomous team at large organizations.

Practical Implications – Autonomy is a central function of Agile teams. Agile methods are becoming increasingly popular at the large-scale. Understanding the key success factors presented in the findings and reviewing the questionnaire, managers can further their enablement of autonomous Agile teams at the large-scale and understand how far they have come. Similarly, teams can understand how they can contribute.

    Abstract [en]

A certain level of employee turnover is necessary for the organization’s continuous profitability. However, employee turnover in the audit profession is described as a problem. Previous studies have explored different aspects of turnover at the individual level. Where factors have been identified for why associates chooses to leave audit firms. Previous studies have also focused on the influence of different methods on the individual's decision to leave the industry. The purpose of this study is to analyze employee turnover from the audit firms´ perspective, and then identify differences between large and small audit firms. To answer the research questions and fulfill the purpose, both a questionnaire and interviews have been performed. The questionnaire was sent out to audit offices around Sweden and provided answers from 32 different offices. Four auditing firms in Norrbotten were then interviewed, two small and two large auditing firms. The study shows that audit firms in Norrland have a low employee turnover, but turnover in the industry as a whole is still considered too high. The main conclusion of the study is that turnover varies between audit firms and that the size of the firm is an explanatory factor. In addition, the study shows that management and external factors have an impact on turnover. However, external factors cannot be influenced by management, but is something that management should adapt to in order to retain its employees.

Mitigating Not-Invented-Here & Not-Sold-Here Problems: Leveraging External Ideas through Corporate Innovation Hubs2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to understand How Corporate Innovation Hubs (CIHs) can Mitigate NIH and NSH Problems in Knowledge Transfer. To fulfill this purpose, the following research questions were derived: RQ1: What are the causes of NIH & NSH problems among actors collaborating through a CIH? RQ2: What are the consequences of NIH & NSH problems among actors collaborating through a CIH? RQ3: What mechanisms can a CIH use to mitigate NIH & NSH problems among collaborating actors?

Method – The study is an explorative inductive multiple case-study, investigating five CIHs situated in either Silicon Valley, US or Gothenburg, Sweden. In total, 39 interviews were conducted in three waves, and results were derived using a Gioia analysis.

Findings – This study resulted in a framework illustrating connections of causes and consequences of NIH and NSH problems with corresponding mitigating mechanisms. The most critical causes are Obsessive control (NIH), Internal antagonism (NIH) and Low confidential awareness (NSH). The most severe consequences are Use of irrelevant knowledge (NIH), Suffocation of external ideas (NIH) and Restrained problem-solving (NSH). The most important mitigating mechanisms are Translate relevance of ideas (NIH) and Create mutual confidential understanding (NSH).

Theoretical and Practical Implications – This study contributes to the scarce literature on NIH and NSH problems among multiple actors collaborating through CIHs. By identifying causes, consequences and mitigating mechanisms of NIH and NSH problems, CIHs will be able to detect NIH and NSH tendencies among its collaborating actors, to mitigate its causes and prevent its consequences.

Limitations and Future Research – The study is limited by the investigated CIHs focus on exploring future transportation solutions, indicating that future studies can investigate CIHs in other industry settings and among other actors collaborating through CIHs.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Thousands of business failures end every year, which leads to consequences for both the company itself, stakeholders and society. The need to be able to detect warning signals before the bankruptcy is an actuality and the need to at least bate the negative consequences which follows due to the business ceases is huge. Swedish auditors have, according to the law, an obligation to evaluate a company’s going concern status. They also have the obligation to do a listing in the audit report if the company has a lack of capital. The going concern warning is the auditors warning signal for stakeholders and the governments warning signal is the requirement of balance sheet for liquidation purposes when a company has a lack of capital.

Previous studies in the field has focused on financial warning signals and the reasons why the auditors’ accuracy in issuing the going concern warnings varies. This study focuses on going concern warnings and the listing about balance sheet for liquidations purposes. The purpose of the study is to identify the existence of going concern warnings and to increase the insight into the non-financial bases behind a going concern warning. The method of the study is of a quantitative nature and examined the last three audit reports of all companies which business failure ended in 2018.

The content in the audit reports were studied to find going-concern warnings and listings about balance sheet for liquidation purposes, this information was later the basis for summaries, calculation and analyses. The study indicates that the presence of a listing regarding balance sheet for liquidation purposes are more frequent than the going-concern warnings from the auditor. The financial reasons behind a going concern warning is more frequent than the non-financial reasons. Going concern warnings and listing of balance sheet for liquidation purposes are in some cases visible as early as three years before the business ceases.

Semantic Segmentation of Iron Ore Pellets with Neural Networks2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This master’s thesis evaluates five existing Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models for semantic segmentation of optical microscopy images of iron ore pellets. The models are PSPNet, FC-DenseNet, DeepLabv3+, BiSeNet and GCN. The dataset used for training and evaluation contains 180 microscopy images of iron ore pellets collected from LKAB’s experimental blast furnace in Luleå, Sweden. This thesis also investigates the impact of the dataset size and data augmentation on performance. The best performing CNN model on the task was PSPNet, which had an average accuracy of 91.7% on the dataset. Simple data augmentation techniques, horizontal and vertical flipping, improved the models’ average accuracy performance with 3.4% on average. From the results in this thesis, it was concluded that there are benefits to using CNNs for analysis of iron ore pellets, with time-saving and improved analysis as the two notable areas.

Jämställdhet inom revisorsprofessionen: Bidrar revisionsbyråernas reella jämställdhetsarbete till en ökad jämställdhet?2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Studiens empiriska data samlades in stegvis.

Reverse Logistics for Lithium-ion Batteries: A study on BPEVs in Sweden2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In recent years the amount of newly registered electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles has increased rapidly in the Swedish market. These vehicles could be classified as battery-powered electric vehicles, and a majority carry a lithium-ion battery. The demand for lithium is expected to increase considerably, as a result of such a swift growth in battery-powered electric vehicles. Thus, if the recycling rate of lithium stays at a low level, demand could reach a scarcity-level by 2050. While neither any infrastructure nor an established process for recycling lithium-ion batteries currently exists in Sweden, this study aims to provide necessary input and verified tools for the design of a future reverse supply chain for discarded lithium-ion batteries in Sweden.

The literature review of this study covers the subjects of reverse logistics, supply chain network design, and operations research. A thorough situation analysis of the Swedish market for battery-powered electric vehicles is conducted, and the composition, function, and characteristics of lithium-ion batteries are studied. The study finds that estimations of future demand of recyclable lithium-ion batteries in Sweden could be between 206 711 and 726 974 tons accumulated, based on actual and predicted sales numbers until 2030. Even if it is obvious that there are going to be large quantities of such batteries requiring recycling in the future, and even if some established processes exist, there is no defined supply chain for the collection of those batteries. Finally, a mixed-integer programming model for the design and development of a future reverse supply chain is presented. The model, characterized as a discrete multi-period facility location/allocation model, can with minor modifications be used for problems with fluctuating demand or when the demand is assumed to slowly progress until it has reached a steady state.

    Abstract [en]

Since the 1980’s, the New Public Management (NPM) has been the dominating management control philosophy in the Swedish public sector organizations. NPM has predominantly been associated with management by objective and has been expected to increase efficiency within public sector organizations. Today the control system in Swedish public sector organizations is undergoing reform with a new system called trust-based control. The foremost purpose of this new control system is to increase trust within the professions and to the citizens. This study is a qualitative case study of the Swedish Tax Agency’s implementation of the trust-based control system and the challenges that this implementation entails. The study was conducted at the Swedish Tax Agency’s office in Luleå, where managers and employees were interviewed in two stages. A thematic analysis was applied to process the data, in which four main themes appeared; team-based mode of operation, employee responsibility, customer perspective and performance evaluation. The main conclusions of the study are that the Swedish Tax Agency’s interpretation of trust-based control is a team-based mode of operation. The implementation process has been primarily decentralized, with some aid from Susan A. Wheelan’s four-stage model. Furthermore, it is concluded that the foremost challenge with implementing trust-based control is to adjust the performance evaluation to fit the new mode of operation.

Ekonomutbildningens relevans för arbetsmarknaden: En kvalitativ studie ur olika intressentperspektiv2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Labor market in business administration is facing many changes. It is argued that the education is not matching the labor market in business administration and furthermore not keeping up with the changes. Therefore, a discrepancy exists between the employers' demand and the competencies available. The latter is especially true for recently graduated students. The purpose of the study is to examine what expectations various interest groups have on the financial education and to create an understanding of how relevant newly graduated economists’ knowledge are to the labor market, and how employable university-educated students in business administration are after their education. To achieve the purpose, we propose a theoretical framework based on previous research. This creates an understanding of the business administration educational programs and the education gap that exists today and intends to demonstrate the different criteria for employability. In addition, stakeholder theory is presented, which shows that different stakeholders have different views of university education. To fulfil the purpose of the thesis, the work has used a qualitative method in which interviews were conducted with students, alumni, teachers and employers in order to get different stakeholders' views on the topic. The work has been based on an interpretive approach to interpret the informants' perception of the relevance of financial education. An interpretive analysis was subsequently used to analyze the respondents' answers. In this way, insights and thoughts could be identified that were interesting to answer the research question: How relevant is the financial education for the labor market and how does the content of education affect the graduates' employability? The result shows that the answer to the question depends on who you ask. The relevance of the education depends on the expectations of the various stakeholders on the education. Thus, an expectation gap was proven valid rather than an education gap. The university has not managed to communicate its purpose to its stakeholders. A clearer positioning regarding the financial education and its purpose could lead to the expectation gap decreasing both for students and employers. At the same time, the value of a university education, which is now difficult for stakeholders to see, should increase.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose - Previous studies suggest that regulatory changes result in an increased audit effort. Given a competitive market setting and audit price negotiation between the auditor and the auditee, it is unclear if an increased audit effort results in higher audit prices. The purpose of this study is to provide the reader with a deeper understanding concerning pricing of audit services. Moreover, we examine if the EU audit reform package, comprising of Directive 2014/56/EU and Regulation (EU) No 537/2014, has had an impact on audit prices.

Method - This study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with public authorized accountants from Big 4-firms in order to gain a deeper insight in audit pricing and the EU audit reform.

Results - The results in this study show that audit effort has increased as a result of the EU audit reform. In addition, this study provides some support that the increase in audit effort has resulted in higher audit prices.

Conclusion - Our main conclusion in this study is that the EU audit reform has resulted in higher audit prices, despite indications that an increased audit effort does not necessarily result in higher audit prices. The main reason behind this uncertainty is due to factors such as the competitive market setting and price negotiation.

Den sjungande trummisen: Att spela trummor och sjunga samtidigt2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Leder hållbarhetsredovisning till prestation?: En kvantitativ studie inom Energibranschen i Sverige2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Kravprofil för basketlandslagsungdomar i Sverige: en deskriptiv studie2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Cultural Impacts on the Managing of Knowledge Sharing Processes: A Qualitative Study of Swedish Banks in Shanghai, China2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The globalization of economies and the technology development have both increased opportunities to businesses as well as challenges. Multicultural workforces and other values in the market compared with the home market lead to complexity in the management control when a business establishes abroad. Individuals’ nationalities impact their behaviors and values and it is the management’s task to coordinate the members’ activities in a way that is beneficial for the company. The banking industry is a knowledge-intensive industry, meaning the employee’s knowledge is the bank’s biggest resource. To create organizational knowledge, it is important that the knowledge is shared within the company. Effective knowledge sharing is hard to accomplish in a multicultural company since it is depending on communication between the employees which can be aggravated by cultural differences. The more distant the involved national cultures are, the harder it will be to achieve intercultural communication.

The Swedish culture is very different from the Chinese culture. China’s economy has developed fast since it opened up to the world market in the 70’s. Today, several Swedish companies are established in China. The purpose with this study is to examine how the Chinese culture impacts Swedish knowledge-intensive companies established in China and to increase the understanding on how to overcome the cultural barriers that are affecting the managing of knowledge sharing. Cultural clashes can imply risk to a company if they affect the efficiency of the internal processes and must therefore be avoided. This field study was conducted in Shanghai, China at Swedish banks to see how they worked with the cultural differences.

Interviews were made with staff of both Chinese and Nordic heritages to see how the cultural differences impacted their operations. The results showed that there are several cultural clashes that affect effective knowledge sharing processes within the companies. The management tries to implement the Swedish way of working in the branches, but the Chinese culture has a strong impact on the communication channels and it creates confusions and misunderstanding between the Nordic and Chinese employees. Cultural understanding and adjustment to the cultural conditions have been shown from earlier researches to reduce cultural clashes. This study supports those arguments by showing that a higher level of intercultural communication leads to increasing cultural understanding and a quicker adjustment to the organization’s way of working. The study also showed that the national culture’s impact on individual behavior was stronger to individuals that have had less foreign exchanges. The study contributes with suggestions of enlightening cultural differences more by formal meetings to increase the cultural understanding within the companies, as well as intercultural team works over department units should be implemented.

    Abstract [en]

Aim: The aim of the study was to describe occupational therapists’experience of using assessment tools. Method: The study was conducted with a qualitative data collection method where ten occupational therapists were interviewed. During the interviews, a semi-structured interview guide was used. When analyzing the collected data, a qualitative analysis was used. Result: Based on the analysis, four categories emerge that describe the occupational therapists' experience of using assessment tools. The categories Time and Knowledge, Clients'Different Needs, Structure and Clinical Experience, and Assessment Tools and the Incompatibility of the Journal Systems show a result that indicates a high workload within the profession. This study reveals a new finding that describes how occupational therapists also exclude assessment tools, since they do not see the assessment toolsas compatible with the medical record system, which contributes to the fact that occupational therapists experience great difficulties in documenting their assessments in a structured and time-efficient manner. Conclusion: From the results presented in the study, it is concluded that occupational therapists today need more time allocated in their work to enable the use of assessment tools. This is to be able to increase theirknowledge of assessment tools, but also to be able to administer them in the intended way, mainly regarding the documentation and medical record keeping

Kartläggning av samband mellan användningen av Instagram i relation till träningsberoende, träningsvanor och ortorexia nervosa bland aktiva unga vuxna: En enkätstudie2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Think outside of the box(es)!: En studie kring en okonventionell metod för improvisation på elgitarr2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Implementation of Hydro Power Plant Optimization for Operation and Production Planning2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Output power of hydro power plant was modelled and an optimization algorithm was implemented in a tool for optimizing hydro power plants. The tool maximizes power output of a hydro power plant by distributing water over a set of active units in the power plant which will be used in planning of electricity production. This tool was built in a MATLAB environment, using the optimization toolbox, and a GUI was developed for Vattenfall. The optimization tool was based on the same architecture as the current tool used for this kind of optimization which is to be replaced by the work presented in this thesis. Therefore, the goal was to achieve the same optimal results as the current optimization tool.

Power output of three of Vattenfall’s hydro power plants were computed and two of these plants were optimized. These power output results were compared to results from the optimization tool currently used. This showed differences within the inaccuracy of measurements of ≤ 0.3%. These three power plants proved that the new tool is sufficient to replace the current tool but further testing is recommended to be conducted on more of Vattenfall’s hydro power plants to prove its consistency.

Polyrytmiska överlagringar2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine occupational therapists experiences of health-promoting dialogue. Today, there is no research that shows the importance of the health-promotion dialogue as an individual factor of change in occupational therapeutic treatment. The study was conducted with a qualitative approach in which the authors conducted ten semi-structured interviews with occupational therapists, working in municipal health care and was active in the south and middle part of Sweden. A qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach was used for the study. This resulted in the following categories; Health promoting or health informative counselling; The environmental dimensions effect on the counselling and Lifestyle habit as everyday habit. The first category indicated that health-promoting dialogue seldom originated from an evidence-based method and had a promoting or informative approach, depending on the level of counselling competence of the occupational therapist. The second category showed that the environmental dimensions played an important role in counselling implementation as well as for the outcome, but seldom supported it. The third category showed that the occupational perspective effected the counselling process, based on its focus on occupation as a therapeutic mean. The study identified multiple promoting and limiting factors which effected the occupational therapists health-promoting dialogue. The authors conclude that this knowledge would contribute to improve the quality in the health-promoting dialogue process of the occupational therapist. This study shows how competence, environment and the occupational perspective constitutes crucial and cooperative factors for the potential change in the health-promoting dialogue.

Smartphone inom rehabilitering för personer med förvärvad hjärnskada: En litteraturstudie2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Aim: The aim of this literature study was to describe how the smartphone is used as a compensatory aid in rehabilitation and the importance it can have for people with acquired brain injury.

Method: To answer the purpose, a literature study was carried out which included qualitative and quantitative research based on eight studies.

Result: The smartphone has many advantages as a compensatory aid and it shows important for people with acquired brain injury in their daily life in many ways. Significant effects could be measured which led to more activities being initiated and completed at the right time, thus many of the basic problems with acquired brain injury are addressed, such as problems with memory, planning, initiation and organization. The smartphone was also preferred by the users in front of other devices.

Conclusion: The study shows great advantages in implementing the smartphone as part of the rehabilitation of acquired brain injury. Furthermore, the study shows that the smartphone is the part of people's lives regardless of if they suffer from acquired brain damage or not. There is a need for further research within the subject since there are few studies that shed light on smartphone's as compensatory aid at present.

Perceived Audio Quality In Popular Music Encoded To MP3 And Opus2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

For storage restriction purposes, audio streaming services often rely on lossy compression formats as files used for playback. In 2018, the audio streaming giant SoundCloud went from using 128 kbps MP3 files to 64 kbps Opus files, and shortly after this was unveiled, music press and users of the service claimed it to be an audio quality impairment. To investigate the reliability in these claims, listening tests using popular songs were performed, having 17 trained listeners assessing perceptual audio quality in 128 kbps MP3 and 64 kbps Opus compared to 44.1 kHz, 24 bit WAV files. When counting scores of all used audio stimuli combined, results showed MP3 outperforming Opus with statistical significance.

Internationalization challenges among born globals: A roadmap for higher success2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to advance the understanding of

internationalization among born global companies. In order to fulfil the purpose, three

foreign market entries were investigated at a Swedish born global that offers digital

    streaming services for audiobooks.

Method – We conducted a qualitative single case study with a grounded theory approach.

The main data was collected through 22 interviews and 13 documents. The data analysis

was two-folded; 1) content analysis for charting the market entries, and 2) thematic

analysis for identifying challenges and how to address these.

Findings – Our findings is divided into three parts. First, we present five challenges that

born global companies might experience when they enter new foreign markets. These

five challenges are sorted as primary; 1) lack of networks, 2) new-to-the-world, and 3)

lack of partnerships, and secondary; 4) lack of market-specific knowledge, and 5) lack of

support. Second, we provide eight actions that can be addressed to either one or more of

the five challenges. The two actions that are most significant, i.e. can address the most

challenges are; 1) utilize established investor, and 2) hire local and experienced employee

on-site. Finally, the two research questions are compiled into a roadmap that provides a

start-to-end guide for how conquer challenges for internationalization.

Theoretical and practical implications – This study contributes to current

internationalization literature by extending the view of born globals’ internationalization

process. More specifically, it provides knowledge about possible challenges and how to

address them, which previous literature has not explored. We believe that born globals

can use the developed roadmap to increase their success rate. We also believe that the

newly identified challenges can be used as a complement to the already explored success

factors, in order to provide managers at born globals with a more holistic view of how

to succeed with their internationalization journey.

En genomtänkt vinterresa: En tolkning av pianostämman i två sånger ur Schuberts Winterreise2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Electronic structure calculations of defects in diamond for quantum computing: A study of the addition of dopants in the diamond structure2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

When doing computations on the negatively (positively) charged NV-center in

diamond, the common procedure is to add (subtract) an electron from the system.

However, when using periodic boundary conditions, this addition/subtraction of an

electron from the supercell would result in a divergent electrostatic energy. So an

artificial background jellium charge of opposite charge that compensate the electronic

charge to make the supercell neutral is needed. This introduces further problems that

needs corrections. And this method is especially problematic for slab supercells, as the

compensating background charge leads to a dipole, which diverges as the vacuum

between the slab images increases. An alternative, recently proposed way of charging

the NV-center is to introduce electron donors/acceptors in the form of nitrogen/boron

atoms (at substitutional sites in the diamond lattice). In this way, we keep the

supercell/slab neutral, and avoid correction schemes. In this work we verify that the

addition of a substitutional nitrogen atom indeed has the same effect on the NV-center

as the more traditional method of adding an extra electron to the system. Further, we

investigate the effects of 1. Adding two substitutional nitrogen atoms to the system (3

nitrogen atoms in total, neutral supercell), 2. Adding a substitutional nitrogen atom and

an electron to the system (2 nitrogen atom in total, negatively charged supercell), 3.

Adding two electrons to the system (1 nitrogen atom, doubly negatively charged

supercell). Additionally, we investigate the addition of acceptor dopants (boron) in

order to analyze the effect on the electronic structure of the NV-center and diamond.

Design for Addressing Data Privacy Issues in Legacy Enterprise Application Integration2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Electronic message transfer is the key element in enterprise application integration (EAI) and the privacy of data transferred must be protected by the systems involved in the message transfer from origin to the destination. The recent data privacy regulation such as GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) has enforced the organizations to ensure the privacy of the personal data handled with obligations to provide visibility and control over to the data owner. Privacy concerns with relevant to sensitive data embedded and transferred through business-to-business (B2B) middleware platforms in enterprise architecture are mostly at risk with the legacy nature of the products and the complexity of system integrations. This poses a great threat and challenge to organizations processing sensitive data over the interconnected systems in complying with regulatory requirements.

This research proposes a solution design to address the data privacy issues related to personal data handled in an enterprise application integration framework. Where electronic messages used to transfer personally identifiable information (PII). The proposal consisting of a design called “Safety Locker” to issue unique tokens related to encrypted PII elements stored in a persistence data storage based on Apache Ignite. While adding REST API interfaces to access the application functionality such as tokenization, de-tokenization, token management and accessing audit logs. The safety locker can run as a standalone application allowing clients to access its functionality remotely utilizing hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP). The design allows the data controllers to ensure the privacy of PII by embedding tokens generated from the application within the electronic messages transferred through interconnected systems. The solution design is evaluated through a proof of concept implementation, which can be adapted, enhanced to apply in EAI implementations.

Förekomst och självskattad upplevelse av arbetsterapeutiska interventioner för kvinnor med stressrelaterad ohälsa2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Mental ill-health is today the most common cause of long-term sick leave in Sweden and stress-related diagnoses account for 49 percent where women are over-represented. The consequences of stress-related ill-health leads to difficulties in everyday life. Where a subjective experience of incongruence between requirements and ability in occupational performance and an imbalance in activity patterns are crucial. Having a balanced activity pattern and experiencing congruence in occupational performance are considered to be essential for experiencing participation and health in occupational therapy theory. The purpose of this study was to explore the incidence of occupational therapy interventions for women with stress-related disorders and their self-rated experiences of the interventions. The method used was a quantitative cross-sectional study where data from 188 women were collected using a self-designed web survey on the social network Facebook. The questionnaire concerned demographic data and the incidence and self-rated experience of seven occupational therapy interventions. The result showed that 37 percent of the respondents had received some form of occupational therapy intervention and on average 2.5 interventions per respondent. There were no statistical regional differences in the incidence of occupational therapy interventions. The most common intervention was Strategies for managing stressful situations (31%). The intervention Workplace adjustments of performance and environment rated highest where 13 out of 14 women (93%) rated Very good/Fairly good. Overall the occupational therapy interventions where rated as Very good/Fairly good (80%). Conclusion: The overall result showed that occupational therapy interventions occurred only among approximately one-third of the women who sought care related to stress-related disorder. However, the majority considered that their experience of the interventions were positive, which indicates that occupational therapy interventions can be a support in the rehabilitation of women with stress-related disorders.
