Abstract [en]

The separation of oxide zinc mineral from silicate minerals in smithsonite mineral, associated silicate minerals and oxide zinc ore samples was assessed using methyl mercaptan (CH3SH), ethyl mercaptan (C2H 5SH) and hexyl mercaptan (C6H13SH; HM) as collectors. The optimal flotation conditions were defined through Hallimond tube, contact angle and batch flotation and the results were applied to a natural Angooran oxide zinc ore. The microflotation and artificial mixture flotation results showed a maximum of 78% flotation recovery using HM. Selective flotation of oxide zinc ore was also accomplished by using an HM collector at pH 9. The flotation recovery was 55% without desliming. When the initial feed was deslimed before bench scale flotation tests, the recovery increased from 55 to 75%with 22·5%zinc content in the concentrate.Whenmethylmercaptan or ethyl mercaptan was used, lower zinc recoveries and grades compared to HM flotation were achieved

Abstract [en]

The formation of thin wetting films on silica surface from aqueous solution of a) tetradecyltrimetilammonium bromide (C14TAB) and (b) surfactant mixture of the cationic C14TAB with the anionic sodium alkyl- (straight chain C12-, C14- and C16-) sulfonates, was studied using the microscopic thin wetting film method developed by Platikanov. Film lifetimes, three-phase contact (TPC) expansion rates, receding contact angles and surface tension were measured. It was found that the mixed surfactants caused lower contact angles, lower rates of the thin aqueous film rupture and longer film lifetimes, as compared to the pure C14TAB. This behavior was explained by the strong initial adsorption of interfacial complexes from the mixed surfactant system at the air/solution interface, followed by adsorption at the silica interface. The formation of the interfacial complexes at the air/solution interface was proved by means of the surface tension data. It was also shown, that the chain length compatibility between the anionic and cationic surfactants controls the strength of the interfacial complex and causes synergistic lowering in the surface tension. The film rupture mechanism was explained by the heterocoagulation mechanism between the positively charged air/solution interface and the solution/silica interface, which remained negatively charged.

Abstract [en]

The surface interaction and adsorption of the components in a mixture of surfactants are of considerable interest for both practical and theoretical reasons. The flotation behaviour of smithsonite in the presence of sodium sulphide (Na2S) and a mixture of potassium amyl xanthate (KAX) and dodecylamine (DDA) and its adsorption on smithsonite surface at various concentration ratios have been investigated using zeta potential, contact angle, microflotation and diffuse reflectance FTIR studies. The smithsonite mineral has weak response to flotation in the presence of KAX alone as a collector. The presence of KAX enhanced the amine flotation recovery in the presence of sodium sulphide. The flotation results using mixed collectors showed the maximum recovery and contact angle were 95.5% and 104° at pH 12 respectively. The FTIR spectra revealed the coadsorption as amine - xanthate complex when mixed collector is used. The presence of KAX increased the DDA adsorption due to decrease in the electrostatic head - head repulsion between the two adjacent surface ammonium head group cations because the anionic KAX sitting between these two cations screens the electrostatic repulsion and increased the lateral tail-tail hydrophobic bonds.

Abstract [en]

The stability and interactions in thin wetting films between the silica surface and air bubble containing (a) straight chain C10 amine and (b) cationic/anionic surfactant mixture of a straight chain C10 amine with sodium C8, C10 and (straight chain) C12 sulfonates, were studied using the microscopic thin wetting film method developed by Platikanov [Platikanov D., J. Phys. Chem., 68 (1964) 3619]. Film lifetimes, three-phase contact (TPC) expansion rate, receding contact angles and surface tension were measured. The presence of the mixed cationic/anionic surfactants was found to lessen contact angles and suppresses the thin aqueous film rupture, thus inducing longer film lifetime, as compared to the pure amine system. In the case of mixed surfactants hetero-coagulation could arise through the formation of positively charged interfacial complexes. Mixed solution of cationic and anionic surfactants shows synergistic lowering in surface tension. The formation of the interfacial complex at the air/solution interface was confirmed by surface tension data. It was also shown, that the chain length compatibility between the anionic and cationic surfactants system controls the strength of the interfacial complex. The observed phenomena were discussed in terms of the electrostatic heterocoagulation theory, where the interactions can be attractive or repulsive depending on the different surface activity and charge of the respective surfactants at the two interfaces.

Abstract [en]

This paper presents results from a laboratory study on the influence of crushed fine aggregate on the rheological properties, i.e., yield stress and plastic viscosity, of the mortar phase of concrete. The effect of grading, particle shape, etc. of the fine aggregates has been evaluated with the use of a viscometer suited for coarse particle suspensions. The evaluation has been done at different dosages of superplasticizer and paste volumes by the use of an inert artificial "cement paste". The results show that the properties and amount of fine aggregate have a strong influence on the water demand and workability of the mortar, i.e., the rheology. The large amounts of fines often found in crushed fine aggregate primarily increases the yield stress of the mortar. The amount of fines also contributes to the plastic viscosity by increased interparticle friction. However, the results clearly show that the particle shape of the fine aggregate strongly contributes to the plastic viscosity. The influence of the properties of the fine aggregate is largely dependent on the paste volume of the mortar. Thus, by increasing the paste volume, negative effects of poorly graded and shaped aggregates can be eliminated or significantly reduced.
