Abstract [en]

The case study, spanning three contexts, concerns a multi-usable cloud service platform for big data collection and analytics and how the development pace and efficiency of it has been improved by 50–75% by using the Arrowhead framework and changing development processes/practices. Furthermore, additional results captured during the case study are related to technology, competencies and skills, organization, management, infrastructure, and service and support. A conclusion is that when offering a complex offer such as an Industrial Product-Service System, comprising sensors, hardware, communications, software, cloud service platform, etc., it is necessary that the technology, business model, business setup, and organization all go hand in hand during the development and later operation, as all ‘components’ are required for a successful result.

Abstract [en]

The paper addresses intelligent and sustainable production achieved through combination and integration of online predictive maintenance, monitoring of process parameters and continuous quality control of both input materials and output from the process. This enables production systems, within both manufacturing and process industries, to move towards zero-defect manufacturing. Such a zero-defect manufacturing approach allows for earlier identification of problems or issues, which will or already negatively affect the output. The paper outlines the first part of the second cycle of an action research effort at Gestamp HardTech AB in Sweden, whose objective is to keep its position as a world-leading provider of press-hardened vehicle parts. In order to fully implement the zero-defect manufacturing approach, 4-6 action research cycles are expected to be needed in order to iteratively refine the approach. During the first cycle, various methods and solutions for some of the individual issues/problems have been conceptualized, realized and initially tested. The selected design criteria for the action research efforts were: simplicity, low cost, robustness, high-quality output and future-proofing. The result from the research in the second cycle so far is an action plan for the technical change and a set of challenges/problems which need additional investigation.

Abstract [en]

n a case study comprising two SMEs offering Industrial Product-Service Systems (IPS2) based on the industrial internet the paper addresses the current cybersecurity level of the two SMEs and the perceived need for added cybersecurity features. Cybersecurity is of crucial importance for most IPS2-offerings if they involve data communications, data collection and storage, and are also part of the customers’ critical processes (i.e., the core processes that always need to work with a high level of availability). The case study reveals that both IPS2-offerings have a basic level of core security spanning IoT-devices, IoT-networks, cloud services and users as well as administrators. Further, of interest is that the SMEs would like to add security cloud services with advanced security functionality in order to achieve scalability and efficiency regarding security- and general management as well as lifecycle management functionality. However, most of the security cloud services are mainly aimed at larger companies and not adapted for SMEs in terms of required knowledge, time and effort required to keep the security configurations up-to-date.

Abstract [en]

The paper addresses machine learning methods, utilizing data from industrial control systems, that are suitable for detecting anomalies in the press-hardening process of automotive components. The paper is based on a survey of methods for anomaly detection in various applications. Suitable methods for the press-hardening process are implemented and evaluated. The result shows that it is possible to implement machine learning for anomaly detection by non-machine learning experts utilizing readily available programming libraries/APIs. The three evaluated methods for anomaly detection in the press-hardening process all perform well, with the autoencoder neural network scoring highest in the evaluation.

Abstract [en]

The book chapter addresses which measures five manufacturing companies have taken, or plan to take, regarding use of data originating from monitoring, service, support, maintenance, repairs as well as other sources, in order to improve the knowledge on availability in the context of providing Functional Products. Commonly, the objective of Functional Products is to provide a function to customers with a specified level of availability (or improvement of productivity or efficiency). The results indicate that systematic planning and collection of relevant data, which is either pre-processed on-board (i.e., locally) or sent as is to central or cloud-based storage and processing, in combination with additional necessary data from other sources, is crucial to build knowledge in order to uphold and improve the level of availability agreed upon with customers. As the use of software in Functional Products increases, the knowledge on availability related to software must be augmented—which can be a challenge for many companies whose operations have been rooted in hardware. Further, the results reveal that getting high-quality input is key in order to use the collected data for analytics and to find root causes. The latter may change how the current value-chain operates and secures the quality of necessary data when providing functions to customers if partners are involved in the provider consortium.

Abstract [en]

The paper concerns a case study about optimizing recycling management in terms of emptying containers holding, for instance, glass, paper, plastics or metal waste collected, thus supporting sustainability of natural resources and the circular economy. The case has been followed from the very start all the way to the current transformation into an IPS2 sold on a subscription basis. The main results of the case study suggest that the provider side must change considerably in terms of the business and organizational set-up, which has been challenging compared to the necessary, though more easily implemented, technological changes. Further, the IPS2 customers foresee improved efficiency and a decrease in unnecessary work if containers are emptied on time. In addition, the core of the IPS2 seems generalizable and transferable to other applications where collection and analysis of data are needed to support decision-making.

Abstract [en]

Functional Product (FP) has emerged as a business concept aimed at offering a function or performance, mainly in business-to- business applications, on an agreed upon level of availability and cost as well as at providing incitements towards a sustainable growth. Today the literature expanded into various specific approaches and IT solutions measuring sustainability. However, the literature lacks such approaches within the FP context. This explorative paper proposes on a conceptual level a strategy to predict a sustainability impact of an FP in terms of environmental and economic sustainability and optimize the FP configuration. This strategy is based on scenario modelling and simulation -driven approach. The practical significance of the proposed strategy lies in its implication to avoid costly “trial and error” method performed in the real world and to enable the development of more sustainable products. Through the proposed strategy, it is foreseen that sustainability impact can be quantified and minimised during the FP system development.

Abstract [en]

New business models, which adhere to new customer values and demands with more service content, call for a closer look at the offered product concepts. One promising methodology is the Functional Product, a total care solution, in which function is guaranteed to a specified level of availability. When guaranteeing function, it is not an option to rely on the assumption that the hardware components will work throughout the whole contract period. For the provider of such a function, predictions of what level of availability can be provided are important, especially over longer periods of time, and a data-driven approach is needed to verify that contracts can be upheld and to what cost. It has been identified that to successfully provide a Functional Product the service support system should be developed as an integrated part of the Functional Product. The success of a functional product ultimately depends on how well the customer values can be fulfilled. Diverse fields such as development, marketing, after-sales, and maintenance, strategy and customer relations must collaborate to identify investment opportunities and system bottlenecks. A holistic perspective can be difficult to grasp, both for an individual and a group of people. To manage this challenge, prediction and analysis tools which encompass the customer situation as well as the constituents of the functional product are needed. Such tools enable rational decision-making by quantifying the value and the risk of investments and reallocation of resources, and should be facilitated by the use of modelling, simulation, knowledge and information management systems. It is demonstrated how collected data from interviews and records can be used to design a support system model in order to predict the service completion time for the support system. The constituents needed to produce a system availability measurement are outlined in a framework of how they are connected in terms of information flow. To enable analysis of the function which adheres to the customer value and asserts information on availability provision, the development of simulation software which takes into account the integrated constituents of a functional product is described. A decision support tool is created, based on the integrated model, initially focusing on the support system, availability and impact of travel times between support locations and customer. How the model can be utilized in the analysis of a real industrial system is demonstrated. Based on continuous meetings and discussions with industrial partners, an improved version of the software which is closer to a total cost prediction tool is also demonstrated, including elements such as personnel, contracts, travel times, periodic maintenance and hardware degradation.

In the functional product business model, a customer is provided with functionality at a guaranteed level of availability under a pre-agreed pricing structure whilst the provider retains ownership of the hardware and provides a service support system to deliver services such as maintenance. The ability to accurately predict the costs of supporting functional product contracts is crucial to the provider in correctly pricing those contracts and for the development and implementation of an efficient service support system. Since the costs incurred are performance based and accumulated over a long duration, they are difficult to predict without effective modelling and decision support tools. This paper discusses a decision support tool that has been developed to provide detailed analysis of the predicted long-term costs of supporting functional product contracts. The tool features a web based user interface to allow collaborative use of the tool by multiple users. The cost predictions are obtained through a discrete event simulation model that emulates the performance of the hardware and service support system used by the provider to fulfil the functional requirements specified in the contracts. The simulations are executed on automatically provisioned remote web based servers, meaning that the computing resources utilised are not limited by the user’s client device. The tool is demonstrated via application to an industrial test case

The customization of the support site configuration (including the number, locations and capabilities of sites where maintenance staff are based) is of critical importance to functional product providers, who must provide maintenance support services for products operated by their customers at different locations and ensure that contractual guarantees for functional availability are met whilst keeping support costs under control. Since contract fulfilment costs are performance based and long term, they are difficult to predict without modelling. This paper discusses a decision support tool designed for use by management and engineering personnel at Functional Product providers to analyse and optimize the performance of their support base configuration. It features a graphical user interface for configuration customization, simulation modelling to predict performance and outputs a wide range of analytics that can be used to compare and optimize configurations. The tool is demonstrated via application to an industrial test case
