Abstract [en]

Several studies in Sweden have looked into railway electromagnetic interference (EMI) either to discover the source of the interference or to determine if the equipment in the system is performing properly. The movement of rolling stock along an electrified track produces certain EMI events. Transient electromagnetic fields are produced in the signalling system when the train leaves the neutral section of the overhead power line and enters the powered section. These transient EM fields are mainly produced by the engine. The track’s infrastructure system has been tested for EMI events, but this phenomenon affects the surrounding environment as well, up to at least 10 meters from the track. The infrastructure is designed so that the return current from locomotives should go through the running rails, but occasionally the ground acts as a conductor, transmitting current to areas that are distant from the rail. The paper reviews the status of Swedish railways with respect to electromagnetic compatibility. This TREND project is a joint project with 7 FP EU.

Abstract [en]

The transport of iron ore from the Swedish mining areas to the harbors is carried out by electric trains. In 2003, there was a dramatic increase in the number of bearings discarded due to electric current corrosion. No evident reason to this increase could be found and a project was initiated measuring electrical currents in engines and couplings as well as position and velocity of the train in an attempt to find countermeasures to the excess currents in the bearings. The RMS-magnitudes of the currents have been recorded and compared for different positions on the train, for different train configurations, and at different driving conditions. The results showed substantial electrical currents going through the couplings and much higher currents in modern trains with 30 tons axle load compared to old trains with 25 tons axle load.

Abstract [en]

Electrical currents and voltages were measured on wheel bearings of heavy loaded ore trains in the north of Sweden, while the geographical coordinates and the velocity of the train were recorded by means of GPS. The RMS-magnitudes and the frequency spectra of the currents have been recorded and compared for different positions on the train, and at different driving conditions, including very low winter temperatures. The results showed substantial electrical currents going through the wheel bearings and much higher currents in modern trains with 30 tons axle load compared to old trains with 25 tons axle load. The measured voltage over the wheel bearings showed that the voltage varied depending on the axle load.

Abstract [en]

The close environment of railway tracks is heavily polluted by electromagnetic noise from the railway system itself. The reliability of railway signalling, communication, and control systems depends on good immunity to electromagnetic noise. There are sometimes false detector signals indicating non-existing flat wheels and ghost trains. A possible reason for detector failures is interference by transient voltage peaks in the detector system. Thus characterisation has been made of the electromagnetic environment around the detector system located at the track. The investigation shows that the typical electromagnetic environment is a combination of broadband low-level noise, and rare fast transients of potentially harmful amplitudes.

Abstract [sv]

Under år 2003 noterades en kraftigt ökning av antalet rapporterade skador pga elektrisk korrosion på malmvagnarnas axellager. När elskadorna på lagren upptäcktes, så hade det alltså under många år pågått en process av mångsidiga förändringar av både infrastruktur och rullande materiel. Med tanke på konsekvenser i form av urspårningar och förseningar, som kan bli följden av oupptäckta lagerskador började man genast att utreda möjliga orsaker till elkorrosionsskadorna. Syftet med detta projekt var att öka förståelsen av tågströmmarnas vägar och storlek, och att förslå möjliga åtgärder för att minska strömbelastningen i vagnslagren. Ett utgångsantagande har varit att uppkomst av strömskador står i direkt relation till lagerströmmarnas storlek - ju starkare ström, desto större risk för skador. Dock måste man ta med beräkningen att skador inte inträffar på stillastående lager, där metallytor ligger i direkt kontakt med varandra. Därför genomfördes flertalet studier under gång bl.a. hur spänningen mellan vagnskorg och räl varierar, variation av strömmen i vagnskopplen i olika driftsituationer, samt inverkan av s.k. jordlina. Vad man kan se är att förutsättningar finns för strömorsakade lagerskador. Tex uppmättes mycket höga spänningar över hjullagren (ca. 2 V), koppelströmmar på ca 50 A (RMS) för lätta malmtåg med UAD-vagnar och 160 A (RMS) för tunga tåg med UNO- vagnar samt lokalt mycket höga koppelströmmar vid passage av stationer. Åtgärder för att minimera strömorsakade lagerskador har pågått, från Banverkets sida, under detta projekts gång (juni 2005 till april 2006) bl.a. i form av montering av parallellkopplad jordåterledare. Mätningar som utförts i detta projekt kan inte bekräfta den önskade positiva inverkan av denna jordlina (i form av minskade koppelströmmar). Dock så minskar antal utbytta lager ständigt efter toppnoteringen 2003 med 61% bytta lager vid lagerrevision till ca. 31.5% under 2006 (preliminära resultat fram till juli). Detta är emellertid mycket högre än den normala bytesfrekvensen på ca. 10% åren före 2003. Under antagandet att höga koppelströmmar orsakar lagerskador så föreslås två motåtgärder. Den första i form av isolerat lok- vagns-koppel som förhindrar hög koppelström att gå ut i första vagnen och den andra i form av dedicerad sista vagn med god elektrisk kontakt med rälen som låter höga koppelströmmar passera genom samtliga vagnskoppel och gå tillbaka till rälen genom preparerade lager i sista vagnen.

Växellägesivare för järnvägsväxlar, benämnda TKK, tungkontrollkontakter har provats med avseende tålighet mot följande: Kyla, saltvatten, infrysning, mekaniska påkänningar. Elektrostatiska urladdningar,+8000 V,-8000 V. Ledningsburna elektromagnetiska högfrekvensfält 0.15-80 MHz, Påstrålade elektromagnetiska fält 30-1000 MHz. Radiofrekvens för ATC, Automatic Train Control. Statiska magnetfält. Magnetfält med låga frekvenser från 1 Hz upp till 50 Hz, inklusive 16.7 Hz. EMC immunitetsprovning enl standarder EN61000-4-2, EN61000-4-3,EN61000- 4-6. Resultaten visar på känslighet för magnetfält med frekvenser 0 - 4 Hz, samt radiostrålning i frekvensområdet 22-300 MHz. TKK har passerat alla förstörande prov utom matning med överspänningar, dvs spänningar högre än de som anges av specifikationerna

Abstract [en]

The railway system is continuously being updated. Upgrading axle loads, introducing new engines with increasing power needs and advanced motor control give unwanted electromagnetic consequences for electronic-, telecommunication-, and signalling systems along the track. This can, for example, lead to failure in detector systems and traffic control systems and increased cost due to corrective maintenance. This research project was initiated with the purpose of understanding origin and propagation of radiated and conducted electromagnetic transients in the railway system. To investigate the problem of radiated and conducted electromagnetic interference, it has been necessary to develop new measuring methods. Measurements have been conducted to determine if the more sensitive low voltage systems are influenced by higher voltage systems. An existing electromagnetic modeling tool has been utilized, to model crosstalk between the rails and the overhead line catenary system, and modified to incorporate a combination of two- and three- dimensional models to reduce time and space complexity. The resulting simulation environment can be used to analyze possible sources of electromagnetic disturbances in the coexisting signaling circuitry of today, and to reduce the influence of these sources. This gives a new application of the measurement method and further development of a simulation tool. One of the objectives in this project has been to find out the tolerance of the low voltage detector systems in presence of the higher voltage system used in the railways. One of the conclusions is that correct installation is important and that failure to comply with installation procedures results in high electromagnetic interference. There is no correlation between the presence of trains and randomly occurring disturbances.
