Abstract [en]

Sweden has become a multicultural society over the course of the last few decades. Around two million of Sweden’s nine million inhabitants have an immigrant background. Sport is a global phenomenon and is, as such, regarded as a tool for integration; however, at the same time sport is closely linked to national identity. The aim of this study is to enhance understanding of the sports-related experiences and desires of newly-migrated children, and how these can be met in Swedish sports clubs. We have interviewed six children, 10 to 13 years of age, from various countries with different experiences of organised sport. They were all newly-arrived and attended a transition school in a Swedish municipality. In the phenomenological analysis we discovered four key factors which appeared to be of importance for participation: possessing cultural understanding, possessing social networks, knowing the language and possessing necessary skills. In the discussion we stress that through awareness, sensitivity and flexibility, sports clubs can approach children from various cultures that have different sport’s needs. In the process of involving newly-migrated children in sports, it might be helpful to take the key factors presented into consideration, and reflect on how they could affect participation.

Abstract [en]

In a significant article from 1993, Crum describes the purpose of physical education (PE) as a‘planned introduction into movement culture’. In broad terms, this purpose is tantamount to thestated purpose of Swedish PE in national steering documents. Crum contends, however, thatphysical educators do not prioritise learning, which is largely due to the different ‘movementcultures’ that constitute the PE lessons. This article explores how practice unfolds in movementcultures that are included in Swedish PE and their implications for teaching and learning in thesubject. Some 30 (indoor) PE lessons in eight secondary schools in four cities throughout Swedenwere video recorded. At ‘first glance’ these lessons indicated the prevalence of four logics ofpractice: a physical training logic, a sports logic, a sport technique logic and a dance logic. However, further analysis revealed that the teachers’ and students’ actions were not entirely in linewith a logic of practice of training the body, winning the game, learning sporting skills or learningto dance. Instead, the PE practice largely unfolded as a ‘looks-like-practice’, where the purpose ofteaching was blurred, and where any ‘planned introduction into movement culture’ was difficult toidentify. In the final section, the authors discuss how physical activity logics can be recontextualisedin a PE setting in order to emphasise the educational contribution of PE.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This paper outlines a method for exploring learning in educational practice. The suggested method combines an explicit learning theory with robust methodological steps in order to explore aspects of learning in school physical education. The design of the study is based on sociocultural learning theory, and the approach adds to previous research within the field, both in terms of the combination of methods used and the claims made in our studies. The paper describes a way of collecting and analysing the retrieved data and discusses and illustrates the results of a study using this combination of explicit learning theory and robust methodological steps.
