Abstract [en]
SCA, Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget, is active in the areas of personal hygiene products, tissue, packaging, publication papers and solid-wood products. Within the segment marketing tissue for companies and institutions SCA delivers hygiene solutions in the brand name Tork, consisting of products such as tissue, soap and therefore intended dispenser. The company now wantsto investigate the possibilities of decorating the dispensers, meaning printing a picture, colour or pattern on the products, in a way that differentiates them from the products of competitors and in the same time strengthens the brand. The purpose of this thesis work has therefore been to evaluate the possibilities of decorating dispensers using a systematic design approach. The mission has been to recommend suitable decorating technologies and to develop design concepts for décors that corresponds to the company message. The project work has systematically gone through the different phases of product development. The work started with a pre-study that through literature studies, interviews and personal contact with companies generated information functioning as a foundation for the rest of the work. A problem analysis was performed and a requirement list was established in orderto define the project task. The work continued with a phase of idea generation and concept development. For the design concepts this phase started with sketching by hand and two workshops. During the project the team has been in contact with different suppliers of decorating equipment to investigate the possibilities with each technology and to gather information forthe cost estimations. The concepts, both for decorating technologies and for design concepts, were evaluated and discussed with SCA. The design concepts were also evaluated through an international on-line survey. The result lead to two recommended decorating technologies, one for low production volumes and one for high volumes. For low volumes the recommendation was a so called heat transfer system, also called In-Surface Decoration. For high volumes tampon printing, an automated printing process, was recommended. The work also resulted in three design concepts for décor on Tork dispensers, developed to communicate and strengthen the company and brand values.Estimations of costs were made to give a brief idea of the costs involved to decorate with the two chosen technologies. The three design concepts were further developed and presented as renderings of 3D-models and as prototypes. The prototypes also functioned as printing tests of the different technologies. This project has shown that it is possible to use décor with an, for this business, entirely new approach that strengthens the brand and harmonises with the company profile. For this application there are suitable technologies to use that can be implemented in SCA’s production today.
