Abstract [en]

This paper aims to improve understanding of regional development processes in relation to industry-university links and cluster development. An innovative regional automotive test industry cluster, located in a peripheral region of northern Sweden, is the empirical case at hand. Key findings from our longitudinal investigation show how once the local automotive test industry reached a certain maturity that renewal was sought via developing interregional links with universities. However, due to misunderstandings and imbalance of motives between the respective regional industry and non-local universities, disruptions to the renewal were experienced. Despite such challenges, new university-industry pipelines were able to open and enact renew of the industry clusters development. This occurs through what we term an ‘interregional sensegiving and sensemaking process’ that in our case take place between personal communication and meeting were trust is an important factor. Subsequently, with particular focus on regional industry cluster development and university-industry links this paper contributes to existing literature by showing the potential of applying sensemaking on a regional level and provides relevant implications for theory and practise.
