Audiovisual Desynchronization Impact on Listening Effort: How does Audio Delayed to Visuals Affect Listeners’ Effort to Understand a News Reporter in a Noisy Background?
2015 (engelsk)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
Abstract [en]

There are several articles discussing desynchronization detection and the acceptability of skew values are often treated. The literature on how the desynchronization affects intelligibility and listening effort is at a smaller extent up to this point. New challenges are created when more and more television is streamed from the web. An experiment was conducted where 21 undergraduate students watched a reporter speaking in a noisy environment. The subjects were not trained at detecting skews or listen critically. The audio was delayed in 10 steps of 40 ms (1 frame) from total synchronization to 360 ms. They rated their listening effort and interviews were conducted afterwards. The results show a significant increase of listening effort at 280 ms and 320 ms of delay. There were no statistical significant difference for the clips with a temporal skew of 360 ms. The qualitative study shows different reactions to the desynchronization.
