2014 (svensk)Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to describe the experience of participation in everyday life for boys with the muscle disease Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.Onset symptoms of the disease include difficulty in walking which means that boys become wheelchair bound before the age of ten and the need for different habilitation will be considerable throughout the subject´s life. The study included eight boys between 7- 32 of age.The data consisted of blogs and biographies and was analysed using a qualitative analysis. The results were presented in three main categories: The Importance of Meaningful Activities, The Importance of Environment, and The Positive setting's importanceThe results showed that having meaningful activities were significant, the school and Internet/computer usage were activities that constituted the majority of their activities in daily lives. Participation in daily life was affected by the environment in which the result showed that there were both barriers and resources in the physical and social environment. The boys' positive attitude to have future dreams, motivation and experience of independence were important aspects that the boys had in common. The course of the disease meant that the boys at an early age became dependent on others and autonomy was restricted and increases with age. Occupational interventions increased the boys' independence. The study contributes to increasing knowledge and understanding of how the environment to enable the boys' participation in activities. The authors believe that more knowledge is needed to increase understanding of the boys´ participation and further research is needed.
