Patient transport for difficult urban terrain
2004 (engelsk)Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
Abstract [en]

Ambulance officers frequently sustain work-related injuries. These injuries occur while lifting and moving patients. Transporting patients from a scene to the ambulance paramedics often use a carry chair if the access leads through narrow doors or through stairs. At a visit to Wellington Free Ambulance the Ambulance Officers (AO:s) expressed a dissatisfaction with the current carry chairs and it was agreed that this project should aim to invent a feasible replacement device, designed for the difficult terrain that is common in Wellington and its surroundings. Systematic problem solving was used to structure the development process. The problem have been explored in a qualitative manner through interviews, a focus group and observations of AO:s at work. A survey was however made to validate the list of design issues and rank their respective importance. A full scale mock-up of the final concept was built and tested to evaluate the functionality and dimensions of the chair. The result is a fairly low collapsible chair with a backwards tilted seat. For the varying needs of patients there are two different angles of the backrest. The chair has 3 pairs of wheels, the middle and largest pair is placed almost directly under the centre of gravity to hold most of the weight. This makes for a chair that is easily manageable and still handles uneven surfaces well. Parallel handles allows the chair to be lifted and carried in an ergonomically optimal way and the leading carrier can walk facing forward. Handles are retractable to minimize size when not carrying. Restraints for patients include adjustable loops on the footrests a torso harness and an additional belt around the knees. Complete blueprints for a working prototype were generated as a second part of the project. They were given to Skövde Maskin Konstruktion AB (SMK AB) who have agreed to build a prototype. A pilot study will then be performed at WFA.
