Abstract [en]
This essay does not only show how Joseph Conrad's less known short story "Amy Foster" became a filmscript entitled "Swept from the Sea". It also reveals why Tim Willlocks wrote the filmscript and illuminates the difficulties and the responsibility he had, to be true to the author, the characters and last but not least,to be true to himself when he transformed great literature of the Victorian age into a filmscript where the story even 100 years later still have an important message that speak to people. Furthermore the essay has analysed the origins of the short story and gives several possible clues why Joseph Conrad wrote it.The analysis also includes the aspect of intertextuality. Therefore, this essay form a profound analysis which focuses on some of the similarities and the differences between the short story and the filmscript such as the different titles, the prevailing attitudes of the Victorian age when "Amy Foster" was written versus the 1990's - ("Postmodernization") when Willocks wrote the filmscript, the characters, and the main themes. My wish as the author of this essay is to enlighten the main themes: Bilingualism and Identity - A Human Right: Bilingualism and Identity versus Xenophobia, and Egoism versus Altruism because these main themes have to be taken more seriously. One way is to educate people in these subjects, and my hope is, that my essay will contribute to a better understanding and tolerance between people. P.S Before you see the film, read the short story and this essay! D.S
