Strong women in fiction: a comparison between Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre and Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway
2001 (engelsk)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
Abstract [en]

As fiction very often is a mirror of real life, strong women can naturally be found in numerous novels. For this essay I have chosen to take a closer look at the female characters in Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre and Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway. This essay presents examples of their strength, what they have to face to survive, how they deal with their difficulties, but also examples of the consequences they had to face when objecting to society's rules. The aspects being discussed in the essay are women's ability of staying true to their beliefs, or, when necessary, compromising and adjusting to the particular circumstances of the time. To understand the situation of these women it is essential to discuss the historical background regarding women's situation at certain historical periods. Therefore the essay begins with a short summary of women's history from the nomad period up to 1920, thus covering the periods in which the two novels are enacted.
