A comparative study of health care expenditures in four OECD countries during 1960-1998
1999 (engelsk)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
Abstract [en]

The main focus of this thesis is to estimate the income elasticity of health care expenditures in four OECD-countries. In order to capture this effect, a time-series analysis is used. The period of the study is from 1960 to 1998. The source of data is OECD-Health Data 98. The empirical result of this study is not significant in any cases expect one at which income elasticity is below one but without predicted( i.e. positive) sign. The second aim of this study is to investigate whether socio-economic, demographic, institutional and life-style variables have any impact on health care expenditures. Four variables that are significant in some countries are the share of population at age 65 and over, technological trend, share of in- patient beds per 1000-population and rate of unemloyment. These variables have the predicted sign and can possibly have a positive impact on health care expenditures.
