Abstract [en]

The entrance of wireless links on the Internet has changed the conditions for many traditional Internet protocols. The links must now be used more efficiently and to cope with that, optimisations have been made over the wireless links and over the headers added by the transport and network layers. To obtain the best optimisation, a need to classify the flow with application knowledge on the link level has arisen. This thesis introduces a flow classification algorithm for the most commonly used application protocols. The purpose of the algorithm is to choose the most efficient radio bearer set-up and to use the best encoding algorithm for the headers. The classification algorithm is heuristic with a confidence less than 100%. It is based on characteristics for the different application protocols that is compared to the packet being classified. The evaluation of the flow classifier has been performed on a few protocols commonly used in a wireless environment. The evaluation shows that correct classification is made after varying numbers of packets, but also that flow classification needs to be further developed.
