Optimization of the Gestamp R&D dynamic simulation model

Abstract [en]

In 2006, a dynamic vehicle model with spinning wheels was developed by master student Petrus Esberg. Since then, the Gestamp R&D team at Gestamp Hardtech have found some possible improvements in order to have a more physical and realistic model. The first part of the work consists of investigating the existing model, suggesting and implementing improvements. Improvements are mainly focused on the tire model and its properties. The effects of the changes are measured by comparing the dynamic behaviour of the vehicle model, before and after the improvements. DYNSYS is a research project within modelling of low speed collisions, developed at division of Solid Mechanics at Luleå University of Technology. The project is presented briefly, especially the 1-dimensional model which is implemented into the Gestamp R&D environement. The aim of the DYNSYS project is to improve the correlation between simulations and reality for a crash. The 1-dimensional DYNSYS setup has been implemented on a dynamic vehicle model. Simulations are compared to real crash test results, effects of including the 1-dimensional DYNSYS model in the dynamic vehicle model is also studied. Results show that the new dynamic vehicle model provides some improvements e.g. the model permits crashing immediately without any time for stabilization of the suspension system at equilibrium. By including the DYNSYS 1-dimensional model, the absorbed energy and the intrusion are reduced and closer to the experimental values than the values obtained with the rigid model.
