Abstract [en]

Cepheid manufactures and develops molecular diagnostic testing. This thesis has been performed at Cepheids automation engineering department in Solna. In this thesis one station at Robal (Reagent on board automated line) have been investigated to optimize uptime and performance of delivering liquid to Robal machines. This project aimed to evaluate how to increase uptime to the Robal. Today, one station uses sub-containers (pressure vessels) to deliver liquid to the Robal. The existing problem with these is that they are low in volume, meaning that they provide an increase in downtime. Also, they have a pressure limitation that could affect the performance for Robal. To solve this, a study was done with the goal of finding a solution of how to connect sub-containers together to increase the volume, which on hand would increase the Robals uptime. The work began with a literature study with focus on how similar solutions work, as well as identifying possible consequences of these. Also, a current state analysis was made to get a better understanding of today’s structure and its problem. This resulted in three main problems; downtime connected to low volume, pressure limitations and connected sub-containers. It also led to an investigation of how another pressure vessel design could affect the process. Further, this resulted in how the low volume affects the downtime and which problem the change of these sub-containers has. Reducing one change activity each day, can increase the uptime with approximately 1%. However, the pressure limitation could provide a negative effect on the performance when the liquid level is decreasing in the sub-containers with approximated 0,1 second on the cycle time. The connected subcontainers would provide an increase to the uptime, and a more suitable solution with a T-port, which would connect these vessels together. Yet, there is no economical sustainability in changing the vessel design. In its place, the option of how to use a pump to deliver the liquid should be investigated in order to optimize this process furthermore.
