Abstract [en]

A brief review of some of the most commonly used methods of treating the effluents from aquaculture facilities in Sweden was conducted. This was the first stage of a 3-year investigation into particle movements in aquaculture systems, focusing on particle characterization and methods of reducing the concentration and quantity of suspended particle wastes. Unlike most process industries, aquaculture is to a great extent dependent on a clean environment in which to function. The advantages of removing suspended particles include reductions in: associated nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen compounds; waste organic matter; and suspended solids. The impacts of effluents have been described by Gowen e sub(-) sub(-)t a sub(-) sub(-)l. and filter efficiency estimates have been made by Maekinen e sub(-) sub(-)t a sub(-) sub(-)l. Preliminary experiments conducted at three farms in northern Sweden indicated that a mean of 69% of the total phosphorus was associated with particles larger than 0.45 mu m diameter. In the effluent, the majority of suspended particles, produced by the farms, were within the size range 4-40 to 120 mu m diameter. It is therefore within this range that filtration effort should be aimed, at these farms
