Evaluation of haptic interfaces for in-vehicle systems
2002 (Engelska)Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (yrkesexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
Abstract [en]

By integrating more functions, controls and devices into vehicles, car manufacturers meet many problems. There’s nowhere to place the controls and the driver’s mental workload is already weighed down. The environment gets more computerised as an attempt to implement these functions. Functions such as Internet, cellular phones and navigation systems are already there but this is not the end. More will probably come in the future. How much is it possible to implement before the safety is affected and how will the manufacturers do it? Haptic interface is a innovative possible solution for the driver to communicate with all the functions in the vehicle. The word Haptic is related to the sense of touch and means in this case a multifunctional device that reflects feelings like, vibration, viscosity etc. The general objective of this study is to evaluate a haptic device with a graphic user interface (GUI) as a possible medium for communication between the driver and car. The specific objective of this master thesis is to determine the potential advantages and disadvantages of haptic interfaces in driver situations. This was achieved through a comparison test in a simulator study where the results from the haptic interface were compared and evaluated with a traditional interface in a Volvo S80 environment. The simulator study was used as a tool to measure this interface’s usability and safety aspects. The subjects drove two times, one for each interface and solved some tasks during the scenarios. The ISO definition of usability was used and gave measurements on effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction for objective and subjective variables. These aspects answered questions like: - Did the subjects complete their tasks or not? – How long time did it take to solve the tasks? – For how long time where they looking at the task/interface? – How where the mental workload affected during the test? In general the subjective results seems to be better for the haptic interface. The haptic interface also gave better results, both objective and subjective for the aspect effectiveness since the subjects had a better rate on completing the tasks. The traditional interface got better objective results for efficiency but the subjects gave consistently higher grades for the haptic interface on the subjective results of efficiency. This is a remarkable result. The reason for this could be that the subjects experience the haptic interface more consistent than the traditional and thereby safer to maneuver. The studies also showed that the haptic interface is preferable for tasks with high complexity. This test shows some possibilities and restrictions for haptic devices. For a more improved haptic device the future is promising and might also provide a good solution to relieve some workload of the driver.
