Gweru City Council, Zimbabwe, has been working to create a sustainable waste management since 1993. The project is supported by SIDA, Swedish International Development cooperation Agency, through the Swedish consultant company ENVIVE (Pvt) Ltd. One goal is to include a waste oil management system. The purpose of this work was to enlighten and discuss the waste oil problem in the City of Gweru, Zimbabwe. The main objective was to find a sustainable solution for the final destruction of the oil collected at the different industries around Gweru. Other objectives of this Masters Thesis were to give suggestions for the restoration of the old landfill site. Three different methods to solve the waste oil problem were scrutinised. • Waste oil reduction: Oil-separator with sand filter. • Solidification: Concrete with oil. • Landfarming: Biological degradation of the waste oil in soil. The third method is considered to be the most appropriate for Gweru regarding the fairly low costs for construction and implementation and low environmental impact due to a high oil-destruction. In Gweru we can assume that 70-100% of the waste oil will degrade within 12-21 weeks. Before this method is in full-scale operation there should be some further tests to see how this method would work for Gweru City Council. The oil pond, on the old landfill, must be dealt with as soon as possible. Generally, the old landfill is in need of slope reduction and topsoil.
