Development of a neck protective device for the Gripen fighter aircraft
2005 (Engelska)Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (yrkesexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
Abstract [en]

The master thesis has been conducted at Saab Aerosystems in Linköping. The company wanted ideas about the possibility and advantages of using neck protective devices in order to prevent neck muscle fatigue when flying an agile high-G aircraft with the new HMD system. An HMD system is intended to maximise the combat effectiveness of the aircraft as a complete weapons system. Some of the technique is integrated in the helmet and as a result from this, the helmet has a higher weight and an unfavourable centre of gravity compared to ordinary helmets. This may probably increase the risk of neck injuries when operational. The company is working actively with the risk, e.g. with improvements of the helmet design, and also a neck group has been initiated in order to investigate the risks with the system. As a sidetrack of their own work, they have initiated this master thesis project which they found suitable for an ergonomic design student. The pre-studies to this project started with studies in the human neck limitations and investigations on how weight and unfavourable centre of gravity together with high G load is affecting the neck. Also an extensive market research was made and user opinions were collected. When enough information had been obtained, the product development process started. This was made in a systematic way in cooperation with people at the company. Consultation was made with people having medical background as well as with the pilots. The 27 concepts that came up were evaluated theoretically through discussions and nine of them also practically with models as an aid. Finally the most promising concept was picked out and a proper function model was made. The final for this project was user tests in order to get subjective evaluations and biomechanical calculations in order to get objective evaluations. The results from these tests were positive. The invention made in this master thesis has resulted in an application of protection by patent.
