Abstract [en]

Traditional costing practices are outdated within British Aerospace Military Aircraft & Aerostructures. New Cost Estimating Relationships (CERs) are required in order to represent the changes to working practices within the engineering design phase. This new costing development should form the basis for the Company’s costing philosophy. The main purpose of this project was to generate a suite of technical CERs, representing the non-recurring airframe engineering input, for the design process. The newly generated CERs will enable the prediction of future design effort required, to fully develop a product to a production standard, based on the typically limited product definition at the conceptual design stage. The design process consisted of two major time-consuming activities, which were separated during the CER development. The two main activities were the quantitative activities, involving actual modelling of a part, i.e. modelling at a CAD workstation, and the time spent on thinking, consulting with others, etc, which is referred to as a qualitative activity. At the end of the development process these activites were added together to produce a final CER.
