Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was to develop a guideline for a user interface suitable for implementation in Volvo Truck Corporation’s new line of trucks, the FH-series, scheduled for production in about five years from the year 2013.The number of systems in cars and trucks has increased exponentially over time, as technology progresses. To shield the driver from cognitive stress, high demands are put on the user interface in the vehicle. However, technological progression also opens up for new innovative ways to display relevant information to the driver.A research of which up and coming technologies that could be expected to be viable for implementation within the time span was conducted. The result from that study showed that fully digital clusters and head-up technologies are to be expected.Next, a user study was conducted to determine what kind of information the users want, and in which situations. Legal requirements and relevant cognitive ergonomics were researched as well.When the data collection was completed, workshops, brainstorming sessions and meetings with the relevant department from the client company resulted in a general guideline.This guideline is grouping information into four categories: Depending on the level of urgency, the guideline also specifies in which area of the interface this information should be presented to the driver. Also, a set of different driving modes is suggested. Every driving mode is tailored for a specific situation or working task, breaks or highway driving for example, personalizing the interface to the needs of the driver.
