Young's modulus and degree of polymerization of light-cured dental resins

Abstract [en]

The objective of this study is to characterise 21 different formulations for dental use of the monomers bis-GMA, UDMA and TEGDMA, (including the pure materials and some binary and ternary mixtures) through the analysis of two main properties: Young’s modulus and Degree of conversion. Photoiniator and coinitiator were added to the mixtures and the pure materials in order to make them light curable. Different specimens in shape from those mixtures were cured using the same process to be tested in a Minimat Test Equipment and a Raman Spectroscope. Tensile tests were run in order to get the Elastic Modulus of each formulation, meanwhile Raman spectroscopy was used to determine the Degree of Polymerization. Young Modulus values have been found to vary between 1.4 GPa and 3.6 GPa. Pure bis-GMA shows the lowest modulus, and the general tendency is an increase in the Young modulus as TEGDMA and UDMA percentage increases. The calculated Degrees of Conversion vary between 38.37% and 79.55%. DC increases with UDMA and TEGDMA content, and the increase is sharper with TEGDMA content increase. From these results it was found a variation in properties depending on the formulation of the resin and a not fully correspondence between the Degree of Conversion and Young’s Modulus as expected. The explanation for this fact has been based on the deduced polymeric structure it has been formed for each formulation.
