Abstract [en]

This master thesis studies the feasibility of measuring the thickness and quality of a thin cobalt layer that binds a hard metal disk to a polycrystalline layer using ultrasound. The non-destructive ultrasonic method is being evaluated because the current method is a lengthy, costly and above of all a destructive method. The thesis covers the concept behind the manufacturing of polycrystalline tool tips for industrial cutting and boring applications, the basics of ultrasonic non-destructive testing and its associated signal analysis. The thesis describes the different analysis approaches that were experimented whether successful or not. The research conducted during the project shows that with the current ultrasonic equipment the 25 to 30 um thick cobalt layer cannot be estimated. Different signal processing methods have been used to obtain this thickness. They have been successful only when applied to simulations. However, the quality of the bound between the metal and the polycrystalline layers can be undoubtedly estimated. This point is essential to certify the quality of the product considering that the tool tips are used in a hard environment (turning and milling). The thesis clearly shows that this is only an introduction to the application of ultrasound to this type of manufacturing and that further work will improve quality certification while reducing costs.
