Abstract [en]

In the development arena at Scania engine assembly in Södertälje, prototype and pre-series engines are mounted. In the autumn of 2012 the production volumes associated with pre-series engines will increase sharply, the increase is caused by a small number of engine types. Material flows are expected to constitute a bottleneck and the purpose of this study is to develop a logistics concept to enable a higher production volume. The goal was to develop a cost-effective concept for material supply, design and operation. A subdivision of the report has been made referring to the background, present and future description. In the background the motor assembly logistics system is considered as a whole, in the present situation the development arena logistics is described and the future description concerns the changes due to the higher production volumes caused by pre-series engines. Methods like flow analysis, interviews, benchmarking and checklists have been used to gather information to identify the requirements that should provide the basis for the solutions. The flow analysis linked to the various identified material flows showed that costs were lower for the specialized logistic groups and logistic groups with few delivery points. Overall, the total logistics cost for a certain component depends of the number of handling steps and the logistic groups linked to it. The conclusions drawn, regarding the logistic functions of the development arena, pointed out that existing material flows should be used, their own supply of material should be minimized and instead use the specialized logistics groups in the motor assembly. Based on the findings three strategies for material supply where developed to manage the flow to the development arena that not already supports the conclusions. Special material flows consist of items that were required piecewise, but where there was no existing material supply method to support this. Three layouts supporting the selected material strategy where then developed. The selected concept implies that whole packages are ordered, whether the need of all included items exists or not. If necessary the items can be repackaged in smaller packages and remaining items returned to storage. This approach uses the available capacity in the return flow that currently is unexploited. The final layout has been designed to cope with an increased volume regarding package handling and material flow, which has been addressed by adding a larger logistic area supporting repackaging and goods receiving. In detail processing, work descriptions and a schedule regarding material flow and when to change items in the picking area has been developed. Planning is cyclic and follows the planning periods of 4-6 days used at Scania. The conditions for the development of a standard and thus a basis for continuous improvement are then created. In summary, the logistics cost per engine with the selected proposals declines by 50 % and simplifies material flows significantly. The development arena is recommended to make the changes associated with the layout before implementing the material supply strategy. This is because the layout is essential for use of the material supply strategy in an efficient way and without disruptions.
