Abstract [en]
Increased environmental awareness and demands for reduced emissions are driving electrification for construction equipment. At the same time, there are continued demands for profitability and low downtime. Battery swap technology is currently being investigated in the machine industry as an answer to these demands.
As a part of a larger project within Volvo Construction Equipment, the main purpose of this Master's Thesis is to develop and propose a mechanical system for the battery swap process of three battery electric machines: A30 hauler, L180 wheel loader, and ECR355 excavator. The general conclusion is that a machine-mounted mechanism used to swap battery modules of the mentioned machines is feasible to be integrated into the current machine generations, although with some modifications to the machines.
The system is developed with consideration of the site perspective. This gave rise to an additional feature that enables machine-to-machine collaboration and enables the machines to efficiently utilize the available battery modules on a site. All the necessary steps from the initial idea to the final product have been done, including a thorough study of the problem as part of the product development process. This has resulted in mature design proposals for the hauler and wheel loader, while the solution to be implemented on the excavator will need additional work.
