In the mining industry, rock processing is an important step in the production. Hadfield steel is high strength steels and is used for rock crushing in the mining industry due to its properties such as the wear resistance work-hardening ability and high ductility. However, manganese steel suffers from low hardness and mass loss due to the friction.

The goal of this Master Thesis is to propose and select the optimal parameters to produce a Hadfield steel composite (MMC) with WC reinforcement to improve the wear resistance of the composite. The project will focus on the investigation of the wear resistance of the MMC, in addition of the study of microstructure and mechanical properties.

The microstructure and the mechanical properties have been characterised using the Stereo and Optical microscope, the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Vickers Hardness tester, and X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD). The results have shown successful WC particles reinforcement. The reinforced zone showed an improvement of hardness and a greater improvement was achieved in the samples subjected to wear test thanks to the work-hardening ability of Hadfield steel.
