Abstract [en]

Issues of gender equality have climbed the Swedish forestry agenda, but little is known about how these initiatives are received and understood by those working in forestry. To fill this research gap, this paper empirically draws on men forestry professionals’ responses to a national survey part of the strategy of gender equality in the forestry. The aim is to analyze and discuss the men’s responses, their meaning-making of and positioning of themselves in relation to gender equality interventions in forestry. Two sets of descriptions were found in the empiric. One had a deconstructionist component and recognized how forestry was shaped by a male norm that is perceived to primarily be upheld by older men outside the industry’s employee organizations. The other had a protectionist component, problematizing instead gender-equality interventions taking place in forestry, primarily the perceived use of affirmative action. Concluded is that forestry remains intertwined with specific forms of masculinities, but the focus on hiring more women has left men feeling disadvantaged in hiring and promotions. Also concluded is that the repeated association between the hiring of women and affirmative action constitute acts of resistance to the changes in forestry.
