This thesis project was conducted to design a digital zoom for usage in a FPGA based camera system both in image layout and software structure under the premise of only magnifying a center portion of the actual field of view while also retaining and displaying the full information included in the original data. This system was then implemented on a live video system for further testing and overall review of the performance.
In the first parts of this master’s thesis the basic background of image magnification is looked at and put to use in MATLAB simulations. Based on these simulations, different image styles were tested and reviewed. A tailored system sketch based on the chosen layout is presented; this was then implemented in VHDL and tested using Mentor Graphics products. In the last part of the paper, overall results of the tests as well as possibilities for future enhancements and alterations are presented.
In conclusion, this thesis work proves that hardware based image alteration is possible for use in live video feeds while not making major changes in the original system.
