Description [en]

Örjan Fahlström (b. 1953) is a Swedish composer, arranger and conductor who grew up in Umeå in the northern part of Sweden. He made his debut in 1981 with his own big band, F.I.B.B. (Fahlström International Big Band). His compositions comprise music for big band, choir, symphonic wind band and symphony orchestra. He has maintained multiple engagements as a conductor and composer for many professional orchestras in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Estonia and Germany. For many years he held the position of professor of jazz composition at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. Furthermore, he has been artistic leader for the Norrbotten Big Band and chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Big Band.

Erik Westberg has been the leader of numerous choirs, including the YMCA Choir in Stockholm and the Oslo Philharmonic Choir, and he has also been guest conductor of the Swedish Radio Choir. Internationally, Erik Westberg has been engaged as guest conductor for Pro Coro Canada, Coro Nacional de España, Coro Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo, and Jauna Muzika, Lithuania. He has also been Artist-in-Residence at Wollongong University, Australia. Since 2018, he has been artistic director of the Swedish Youth Choir.  In 2006 Erik Westberg was presented with His Majesty the King’s Medal of the Eighth Size with the ribbon of the Order of the Seraphim “for significant achievements in Swedish Musical Life”. He has been a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music since 2008 and Professor of Choral Conducting and Choral Singing at the School of Music at Luleå University of Technology since 2003.

POESIS - This work is based on texts that in various ways have a connection with the northern part of Scandinavia. In my composing, metaphors are always of major importance, but especially so when I was working on Poesis. The texts are a catalyst and the very driving force in the artistic creative process and a fundamental element in all sections of the work.  My intention has been to give form to the musical narrative by means of the choir and the human voice from the perspective of the jazz orchestra´s immense musical power. The music moves between the soft and appeal and free improvisation, letting the orchestra´s all-embracing mass of sound occasionally break out into contradictory rhetoric.  Poesis was composed in 2017 on commission by the Norrbotten Big Band, the Bohuslän Big Band and the Swedish Arts Council. In this work Erik Westberg has refined the music through his inimitable ability to navigate between subtle choral sonorities and a mature artistic interaction in the context of jazz. It is with considerable modesty, and at the same time elation, that I present this musical work together with Erik Westberg, the Norrbotten Big Band and the Erik Westberg Vocal Ensemble.   Örjan Fahlström in May 2021

Norrbotten Big Band is a contemporary big band with deep roots in traditional jazz, but with branches that embrace soul, funk and contemporary classical music. Norrbotten Big Band has produced a large number of concerts that combine a wide range of musical expressions. The orchestra has been nominated for the Swedish Grammis Award on a number of occasions. It has also been nominated for an international Grammy. Norrbotten Big Band tours worldwide and frequently collaborates with national and international artists.
