Rubin (Robert) Schatten was a Polish-American mathematician, working mainly in functionalanalysis. In the years 1929-1933 he studied at the Jan Kazimierz University in Lvov, and master degree has written under supervision of Stefan Banach. From February 1938 until his death in August 1977 he stayed in the USA, where he obtained his doctorate in 1943 and worked at several American universities. Schatten has published 13 scientific papers and two monographs on the operator theory.He was one of the pioneers of the systematic study of tensor products of Banach spaces. His name in mathematics was immortalized in Schatten's classes of operators. We became interested in Schatten because of the beginnings of his career in Lvov and the lack of a photo in all descriptions of him.So we present the course of his life. His photo will also appear for the first time.

Rubin (Robert) Schatten był polsko-amerykańskim matematykiem zajmującym się głównie analizą funkcjonalną. W latach 1929–1933 studiował na Uniwersytecie Jana Kazimierza we Lwowie, a pracę magisterską ukończył u Stefana Banacha. Od września 1936 roku aż do śmierci w sierpniu 1977 roku przebywał w USA, gdzie uzyskał doktorat w 1943 roku i gdzie pracował na kilku uniwersytetach amerykańskich. Schatten opublikował 13 prac naukowych i dwie monografie z teorii operatorów. Był jednym z pionierów systematycznego badania iloczynów tensorowych przestrzeni Banacha. W matematyce jego nazwisko zostało uwiecznione w klasach operatorów Schattena. Zainteresowaliśmy się Schattenem ze względu na początki jego kariery we Lwowie oraz brak zdjęcia we wszelkich opisach dotyczących jego osoby. Przedstawiamy więc koleje jego życia, o których niestety wiemy bardzo mało. Po raz pierwszy pojawi się też jego zdjęcie.
