Abstract [en]

Artistic research distinguishes itself both from other kinds of research and from artistic work as such. The growth of artistic research has been stimulated by: the academization of professional training; knowledge production outside academia (‘Mode 2’); the ‘[self-]critical turn’ within academia; and the growth of ‘conceptual art’. Three aspects of artistic research in music are exemplified by recent doctoral dissertations: reflective approaches to historically informed performance; composition as research; and the artistic dissertation as an integral work of art.
