Abstract [en]

Tailings impoundments are designed and constructed for disposal of mine waste, i.e. tailings, environmentally safe in a long-term perspective. Tailings dams are raised along with a mines production. Important for tailings dam design and construction are the material properties of tailings, with shear strength and hydraulic conductivity in focus. Studies on these properties have been carried out and are presented. Results show a large variation of properties, thus suggesting that common geotechnical test methods may not be applicable for tailings.

Gruvavfallsdammar är konstruerade för deponering av gruvavfallssand på ett för miljön säkert sätt i ett långtidsperspektiv. Dammarna byggs upp samtidigt som gruvproduktionen pågår. Viktigt för dammarnas design och konstruktion är gruvavfallssandens materialegenskaper, där skjuvhållfasthet och hydraulisk konduktivitet är två viktiga egenskaper. Studier av dessa egenskaper har utförts och presenteras i artikeln. Resultaten visar på stora variationer, vilket antyder att vanliga geotekniska försöksmetoder kanske inte är användbara för gruvavfallssand.
