Abstract [en]

Efforts to improve the calcite flotation from wollastonite and microcline in the presence of ultrafine particles have been made. The ore was divided into six size fractions, 100-75, 75-53, 53-38, 38-20, 20-10, and --10 mu m. Two collectors, Berol 860 and sodium oleate, were independently tested to float the mixtures of coarser size fractions with the --10 mu m fraction, in different proportions. With Berol 860, it was possible to get a concentrate assaying approx 90% CaO sub 3 at > 90% recovery for mixtures containing up to 30 wt.% of --10 mu m particles. However, experiments also showed that the coarser particles, in the presence of ultrafine particles, do not float as fast as they float in the absence of such particles. No evidence for Berol 860 to act as a shear flocculating agent is seen. In the experiments with sodium oleate, some indications for the existence of shear flocculation are seen within the conditions of the experiments. Experiments at different oleate concentrations, sodium silicate concentrations, oil amounts, conditioning speeds and conditioning times were carried out. The results are presented and discussed
