In 1998 Swedish pre-school classes were introduced for six-years-olds as part of the compulsory school system. These pre-school classes share the same curriculum with primary schools. Basically, this means that the local authority can organizes children so that six- and seven- year olds are working together in school. This research studies what happens when staff from pre-school, primary school and recreation centres cooperate in joint activity with six- and seven- years olds. What happens when younger children enter school? Data were collected through individual as well as group interviews with staff. Observations of staff were also carried out. The findings from this research show that the educators conceptualise the children either as six-years-olds, mature and/or immature. Does the way the educator talk about the children, give away expectations of what the children are able to do or not to do? If these verbal constructions of the child are at face value, how can democracy then be practiced from the child´s perspective? Subsequently, will the pedagogical practice contribute different learning opportunities for different children? How can the child practice democracy enclosed in invisible and unspoken boundaries. Can the pre-school teacher manage to practice democracy with the child if practice is enclosed in predetermined expectations of the child?
