Abstract [en]

School leaders and administrators often times face ethical conflicts where different values are in opposition. In this paper we argue that school leaders can approach conflicts as dilemmas between competing values by framing them in an ethical decision-making paradigm. We seek to illuminate the ethical conflicts that emerged from the interview data of teachers and a principal we collected at Dewey, an elementary school located in the Eastern United States. In our study, we analyze ethical conflicts of competing philosophies, voices, and timeframes according to the Shapiro and Stefkovich (2011) ethical framework, combining the approaches of the ethic of justice, the ethic of care, the ethic of critique, and the ethic of the profession. Our findings show the benefit of using ethical analysis as a tool to aid school leadership in understanding the competing values present in the school environment and the conflicts that can emerge as a result of these competing values.Further, our results demonstrate that using ethical analysis to respond to competing values in the school environment creates the opportunity for the involved stakeholder’s personal self-reflection and an increased self-awareness about the leader’s own personal values that influence their moral decision-making practices.
