Based on the authors own experience from work in and with Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SME), this paper discusses about obstacles and possible impediments for SMEs to increase their usage of Collaborative Working Environments (CWE).The conclusion is that barriers for CWE research to become SME practice are weak communication infrastructures, Sarbanes-Oxley Act (for public companies under the supervision of the US SEC), security issues related to CWE-tools, and larger organizations' IT- and information security policies not allowing the use of certain CWE-tools. An important question is if there is a trade off or not allowing the use of CWE-tools from an efficiency perspective?
