Upgrading pegmatite ore by optoelectronic sorting: Techno-economical aspects

Abstract [en]

Attempts were made to examine the possibilities for utilizing optoelectronic sorting tests on pegmatite containing about 40% of the mica shists. High quality pegmatite products were achieved, where the recovery was found to be between 55 and 64%. However, the recovery of the MgO% as the main indicator for mica shist in waste product was found to be 80-91%. Furthermore, the feasibility of installation sorting machines prior to main processing stages for pegmatite ore was taken into consideration and efforts were made to estimate the possible saving in energy consumption for the whole process. Rough estimations indicated, having raw material within size fraction of 12-30 mm, the sorting process consumes about 1.5 kWh/t, resulting in total 15% reduction in energy consumption for the processing plant. The operational cost for sorting stage, however, approximated to be between € 0.5-0.7.
