Crisis management: communication with the media

Abstract [en]

This thesis focuses on how an organization practices crisis management. To be able to get a picture of this, the research of this study enlightens how an organization prepare for a crisis situation, whom are involved in handling a crisis, and how the communication with the media can be described during a crisis. The research was conducted at one Scandinavian company within the airline business. The company was Scandinavian Airline System (SAS) and the research was focused on two crisis situations that had occurred at SAS recently and that had received a lot of media attention. The result of these studies shows that the company is very crisis aware. SAS was well prepared in one case and taken by surprise by the other. The company has well-established crisis management teams, which are build on personality traits rather than on rank and position within the organization. Finally, the study also shows that the communication with the media during a crisis is honest, direct and well prepared.
