Thermal distribution around a thermosyphon installation

Thermosyphons are a passive heat transfer system that were introduced in Alaska around 40 years ago. They have since then been successfully employed in various applications, such as construction and protection of roads, railroads, airport runways and foundations. A study is in progress at the Luleå University of Technology to test the possibility of using these devices in the Scandinavian climate. A certain number of tests are performed at some locations in the north of Sweden, and the ground temperatures are measured periodically to check the efficiency of the thermosyphons. To visualize the information obtained, a computer program with a simple interface was needed. Further, it was desired that such a program was established with a common commercial software. MATLAB® was adopted, in the 5.3 (R11) and 6 (R12) versions. This software features a particular tool, called guide, especially designed to make the construction of user interfaces easier. This Master Thesis deals mainly with the creation of a user interface able to draw the thermosyphon pipes structure, to build the sensors net used to collect the field data, to interpolate this data on a meshgrid and then to display the frozen ground bulb in different ways. The interface is an autonomous program, with a characteristic structure focused to receive data from different thermosyphons installed at different locations. It is also possible to save and retrieve the files that the program has produced, such as interpolated data and images. A short analysis of the results obtained from a thermosyphon installation in Luleå is presented. The device has shown to be effective during both the winter and the spring period. The freezing process was intensified during the winter and extended towards the warmer months.
