Implementation and evaluation of TCP Westwood in Linux

Abstract [en]

TCP Westwood is a sender-side modification of the TCP congestion window algorithm that improves upon the performance of TCP Reno in wired as well as wireless networks. In this thesis a novel TCP version named Westwood has been implemented and evaluated in Linux. The final implementation is both robust and flexible. The code modification that implements TCP Westwood allows the Linux TCP routine to work both as before or in Westwood mode. All TCP extensions implemented in Linux are also compatible with the implementation of Westwood. All important parameters related to Westwood can be modified in run time. In this thesis almost all experiments in the recently presented work about Westwood have been repeated using an experimental setup. These experiments corroborate those results and has showed that Westwood has indeed significant advantage over Reno in wireless networks with lossy links. They also show that Westwood is friendly to Reno and has good properties with regard to fair bandwidth sharing. Also experiments with bandwidth estimation have been made that shows that filtering algorithm should probably be improved to avoid undesirable bursts in the estimated value. During the implementation a few points concerning both the implementation in kernel and the original Westwood mechanism were raised that require more thorough examinations. Some of these points were tested and evaluated.
