Abstract [en]
The purpose of my paper was to describe four American singers' thoughts about learning American art songs. I interviewed four students, who were advanced singers planning to go to graduate school next year. My teacher Dr. Julie Anne Wieck at Washington State University recommended them, and two of the singers had been taking lessons before college and been into music for a long time. They also played other instruments (the piano and the flute). The other two singers had only little musical experience before college. In my investigation I asked them about the American art songs they had been working with, and they brought the songs to the interview. We discussed the learning process: how they learned these songs and what difficulties they thought the songs had. Some songs had been learnt a couple of years ago and we discussed how their approach of learning a new song has changed during college. I asked them of what they thought about singing American art songs and how they dealt with the pronunciation of American English. In my result I found out that all four participants had different methods of learning a new song. They were very aware of how they learnt in the best way and they used aural, visual, kinesthetic methods to help them. They had discussed how to learn a new song with their teacher, but did not really know about any literature in this matter. Significant difficulties of American art songs were difficult rhythms since the music is contemporary. I did get an insight of some American art songs and some songs are possible to give to young singers: for example Old American Songs by Aroon Copland.
