Study of compressive strength of composites

Abstract [en]

Factors influencing compressive strength are still fairly unknown. In order to determine some of them, cross-ply laminates with different bundle size have been tested. It has been found that cross-ply laminates with bigger bundles in one direction have lower properties than the ones with the same bundle size in both directions. Due to manufacturing problems one laminate had wavy fibres and it has been decided to study influence of fibre waviness on laminate properties in compression. To type of composite models have been done: off-axis fibre laminates and laminates with insert. Results show that both fibre misalignment decrease laminate properties in compression. Using linear fitting of the results it is even possible to predict compressive strength of a laminate with a known misalignment angle. Finally post-curing consequences on compressive strength have been studied and even if it is difficult to estimate quantitatively its influence, post-curing seems to increase compressive strength.
