Stabilisation of light-weight shear walls with double plasterboards

Abstract [en]

Gypsum plasterboards are a common lining material for steel wall frame systems in combination with cold formed steel studs. These walls are nowadays often lined by two plasterboards to improve the refractoriness of the wall. There exist only models based on rough approximations to predict initial stiffness and resistance of shear walls built in this way. In this work an improved analytical model and a numerical model, based on small scale test, have been developed, to predict the behaviour of the whole shear wall. Improvements of the analytical model made are: • inner forces acting along and vertical to the studs and the tracks are taken into account • stiffness of the wall is calculated more exactly • shear wall resistance is estimated by the upper and lower boundary range of the solution • an estimation of the load-displacement relationship is obtained until the resistance of the fastener is reached. Charts for the characteristic resistance and characteristic stiffness of the shear wall as a function of the screw spacing and the shear wall setup are prepared.
