Abstract [en]

The BCB Bar Counter is a machine whose main function is to count and separate bars in rolling mills. It is a central part of the Sund Birsta Bar Handling System, a system that handles steel bars from the moment they leave the cold shear cutter up until they’re packaged and ready to be shipped off to customers.The BCB Bar Counter is currently a market-leading solution for counting and separating bars, as its offering the highest capacity and accuracy available. Though because Sund Birsta has focused solely on increasing the performance of the machine it is now lacking in other areas such as production costs, design and ergonomics. This master thesis aims to develop a new machine frame which improves these areas. The goal of the project has been to develop a concept and thereafter production drawings for a finished product.The project started out with a thorough pre-study, with the aim to identify user needs and to determine the current design’s problems. Methods such as user studies and interviews were implemented to gather user information. The results were compiled into a design specification and used as a starting point for developing the concepts. Three concepts were developed using various creativity methods such as functional analysis and Osborn’s checklist; they were then put through an evaluation process and brought down to one final concept. The concept was thereafter developed further into a final product consisting of a CAD-model, photorealistic renders and production drawings.The result is a new machine frame, which is modularizable, adjustable and carries the characteristic design language of Sund Birsta. The new machine frame permits a decrease in production costs and is possible to produce in larger series than before. Because of the new design, it is believed that some of the downtime, that the customers experience today, will be decreased. Users who use the machine on a daily basis will find that the new design makes it possible to conduct maintenance work without being exposed to adverse loads, and that the parts that need maintenance are readily accessible and easy to attend to. Furthermore, the new design language makes it easier to understand the different functionalities and properties of the machine.
