"Ett sätt att umgås": En kvalitativ studie om upplevelsen av MMO-spel

Abstract [en]

Massively multiplayer online game (MMO-games) is a digital world where millions of players can meet and play together. This thesis aims to investigate what the players think MMO-games contribute with and how the social interaction is experienced. The questions are: What makes you start to play MMO-games? Why you continue to play? And how is the social interactionexperienced in MMO-games. This study is qualitative and seven interviews were conducted to obtain the respondents experiences of MMO-games. A thematic analysis show the intervieweesbegan to play because of their friends and also continued because of them. In MMO-games, the interviewees have created a wide social network. Games contribute to joy, disconnection and escapism as well as teach the interviewees to communicate with different types of people. MMO-games also facilitate to express themselves online, and provide the opportunity to perform and be the best. But the social interaction is the interviewees main reason for playing. They have acquired several online-friends and some of them can also be compared with offlinefriends.
