Introducing a unified card for the Luleå University of Technology
2001 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

In Luleå University of Technology (LTU), university students in the campus use approximately six cards. Today with smart card technology it is possible to introduce several features in just one card. The aim of this project is to combine the various features of currently used different cards in just one to give comfort and increased usability for the user, i.e., students and employees. Questionnaires survey conducted during March and April 2000 indicated that 83% (889/1,067) of the respondents approved a card with unified features. This survey had some critics, due the limitations of time and cost constraints, but it emphasised the need to commence a study for introducing a unified card in the University. A mock-up was made and which will be the basis of a prototype and initial version of the card that shall be tested with samples of chosen students and employees. This mock-up was tested with students and present positive results. The subjective assessment (from 1 – ‘strongly disagree’ to 5 – ‘strongly agree’), the students (n=30) indicated a mean of 4.10 (standard deviation 0.61 and range 3) for the overall feature of the card. A proposed assessment procedure is that the students who submit an application for the term registration to the Student Union will be randomly selected for the prototype test. They will receive a prototype and a questionnaire in Swedish or English version. The employees can be selected by random using the employees’ list. Those selected through this random procedure will be invited to use and test the card. The definite card is proposed to be introduced by clusters of students or employees to obtain the control over all the system. After the initial results, a final model will be tested and implemented. In the future a more sophisticated card can adapted to the new features and system. The objective is to use the actual system with minimal alteration in the routine, tasks and features in the current cards providing a soft transition of changes.
