Abstract [en]

AbstractThe aim of the study was to examine occupational therapists experience of team work in outpatient care associated with stroke rehabilitation. Six licensed occupational therapists with at least one year experience of team work in stroke rehabilitation participated in the study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with the aid of interview guide. The collected data were analyzed by qualitative content analysis and resulted in four categories: “ Factors that contribute to a well-functioning dialogue”, “The importance of a well-developed collaboration”, “The importance of complementing each other's competence”, “The importance of addressing challenges”. The results showed that there are a number of factors that affect the team-based outpatient rehabilitation in stroke rehabilitation. Dialogue, cooperation, competence and the way to address challenges are all presented as key components when creating an effective team work. Dialogue describes the importance of time is available for communication and also describes the ICF as a key component. Collaboration describes the factors and strategies that are relevant for effective cooperation and also the approach to focus in rehabilitation. The result from the category competence describes the importance of transboundary approaches and also addresses experiences concerning complementing each other's skills when working in a team. Challenges show internal and external factors affecting teamwork such as resources and patient motivation. The conclusion of this study is to dialogue, cooperation, competence and approach to tackle challenges are all essential components of the effort to create an effective team work. The study may be of interest to both occupational therapists and other health care staff when the results provide insights into teamwork from an occupational therapy perspective. The authors believe, however, that the results cannot be generalized and therefore further studies in this area are necessary. Keywords: Occupational therapy, teamwork, outpatient care, stroke rehabilitation
