Recycling of materials in rail vehicles: in theory and practice

Abstract [en]

This report presents the results of the final project of the Master of Science program at the Department of Materials and Manufacturing Engineering at Luleå University of Technology. The work was carried out at Bombardier Transportation, formerly Adtranz, with the CoC Design for Environment group in Västerås, Sweden. The purpose of this work was to collect information about material recycling and recovery methods and to determine the level of recycling practically possible for the rail vehicle Regina. The importance of knowing specific material content in a vehicle and end of use methods for materials will increase with coming regulation and customer requirements. The scrap value has been analysed but transportation costs and labour costs have been excluded. About 94 % of the materials and components by mass in the rail vehicle Regina have been studied. The practical possible recovery rate of Regina is today just above 90% and the material recycling rate just above 80% (the metal content).
