Icons on videophones: a study with Finnish elderly
2002 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

The main focus of the study is the testing of icons in videophones by elderly users in Finland. Pictograms (icons) are used more and more frequently not only for the purpose of denoting locations but also in the context of the controls and indications of technical devices. In areas like telecommunications and transport, pictograms have been used successfully for some times, in some cases standardised. In this study, consisting of three part questionnaire, the subjects were asked to identify, recognize and choose the most preferred icon for 7 functions in the videotelephones. Questionnaires and focus groups concerning technology and videotelephones features were also performed by the subjects. The study also consists of literature survey on aspects of elderly, interface design, technology and pictograms. The results of the study show which icons the subjects readily recognized and preferred. It also revealed that they had difficulty identifying the icons when writing what they perceived the function to be from there own cognition. The results of the questionnaires are statistically analyzed. Recommendations are made for icons which showed the best results. The discussion focuses on the results of the icon testing as well as subjects' view about aspects of the tests, videophones and technology.
